Hello Culture Lab family,

Happy Independence Day in advance! We are ecstatic to launch our monthly newsletter that will give you an insider’s peek into the many cultural disruptions the Lab is brewing. You are part of an exclusive network of people that we want to reach out to and keep up-to-date on the various ways that our Godrej India Culture Lab is being a catalyst in conversations around contemporary India.

This August, we stay true to our spirit of collaboration. Indie-pendence Day, our annual celebration of non-commercial Indian cinema, is back in a new avatar - ‘Wandering Women: The Feminist Docu Film Festival’. The fest is in collaboration with our friends at The Ladies Finger - an extraordinary website that is publishing cutting-edge writing about the modern Indian woman. This month we will also collaborate with our dear friends at Lakme Fashion Week, where we are bringing together the top fashion editors in the country to discuss the future of fashion journalism.

We are also looking back at two fantastic events we held at the Lab. The first was a talk by animation superstar Priyamvad Deshmukh, who works for the VFX studio Weta Digital founded by Peter Jackson. The second is an event curated by our summer scholar from Yale, Nitika Khaitan. After intensive research, she got together performance poets from different traditions in the art form to showcase their works at the Lab. Also, don’t miss the video of Sheena Iyengar’s talk about women’s education held earlier this year.

We look forward to your feedback.

People Passing Through
Godrej India Culture Lab is truly moving towards becoming an international hub for new and experimental ideas. It was great meeting our Vikhroli Skin collaborator, Radhika Batra of Radhika’s Fine Teas. It was also great catching up with Museum of Memories collaborator Adhuna Akhtar who spoke about the amazing her amazing work with Bblunt. We were excited to host filmmakers – Paromita Vohra and Madhushree Dutta – don’t miss their films at our Feminist Film Fest on August 15-16. We also met the crew from Mixtape, the artist management agency who we are brewing some trouble with.

Our Performance Poetry Funda in pictures
July 22, 2015
If you thought poetry is dead, you would be proved dead wrong at our Poetry Funda. Braving torrential rain, more than 200 people showed up for the event that featured poets from different traditions. During the Q&A the performers gathered on stage – this included a Marathi lokshahir, a Tamil rap crew, English and Hindustani spoken word artists and a theatre troupe, artistes who would have otherwise never shared the same stage.
