President’s Pitch

Hi 88ers,

What a great summer that was. Everything was going so well then along came Cyclone Covid and blew it all to hell.

The real harm that is falling on the club structure and all of the businesses that support sailing is also getting worse and worse for every day sport is on hold.
Plato said "Necessity is the mother of invention". Not sure he was a Young 88 sailor but he was right and invent we have. The year to go sailing plan has had to have a major overhaul. Thanks also to association secretary Carl Webster for leading our class to be one of the first to fill the gap with an eSailing series.

A special request from class and club volunteers. We spend a ridiculous amount of time stressing about participation in the events & phoning, emailing and texting to get competitors to enter & pay. That is time that could be spent more productively. As an owner/crew can you please help out by ensuring your boat responds as early as possible to invitations and pays on time :)

Hopefully we will all come through this crisis relatively unscathed. If you do need a hand  & think we might be able to help please get in touch.

Stay safe

Covid 19 Update

We are doing our best to get back to sailing safely and in compliance. Working across the various C19 sites can get confusing. This is a link to NZ Government body Sport NZ's Alert Level Information  including both requirements and recommendations  for various types of sport.  This is a link to Yachting New Zealand C19 page. Expect updates from the Organising authorities and clubs as the situation evolves.

From The Measurer

Six boats and eight committee & crew volunteer measurers lined up for the annual Westhaven weighing/measuring session..... Continue reading here

General reminder to please contact our measurer before you make any changes to your boat and don't forget the clause on the front cover of the class rules: "Please remember: these rules are closed class rules where if it does not specifically say that you may – then you shall not."

Association Updates

Have you joined the Young 88 Owners Association yet?

Crew Memberships start at only $10 per year
  • There’s nothing quite like racing alongside other Y88s. Coordinating these events and communications take time, and time is the one resource most owners don’t readily have. The Class Assocation manages ongoing communications via email, website and social media, enabling owners to easily engage at whatever level they wish without having to organise on their own events
  • Strong owner associations add value to owners and crew by helping preserve and enhance the resale value of boats. We hope you’ll keep your Young 88 forever, but in case not, we want you to get both the most out of it and the most for it.S
  • Members discounts with key suppliers including Harken/Fosters, North Sails, and more

Upcoming Events .....

Mount Gay Rum 1-2-3 Series

May - July 2020

Who can master the Y88 shorthanded? - Comprising of Covid friendly single handed harbour races, two handed windward leewards (no extras)  and three handed windward leewards (with extras) events - the 1-2-3 series is the ultimate test of mind, body and multi tasking! Click here for more info

Young 88s @ SSANZ Lewmar Triple Series
July - August 2010

With 30-60 mile courses, 2 crew and 3 races spaced approximately one month apart, SSANZ has come up with a successful formula that just gets better every year. 2019 saw a record eleven Young 88s entered in the series. 88 sailing is mainly about line honours but adjustments to handicap time correction factors added another dimension with boats sailing under jib and main to compete with the boats carrying extras for handicap prizes.

Mixing it up in  2020

The Young 88 is an ideal trainer and trial horse for any crews keen to start working towards the 2024 Olympic Mixed Doubles  event.

To recognise this new event and growing trend in our sport the Young 88 Association will be providing a new  "Young 88 SSANZ Triple Series Mixed Doubles Trophy" to be awarded to the first boat on line in the series with a mixed crew in every race . Click here for more info

Harken Nationals Incorporating the North Sails Owners Champs

21-22 November 2020

"The Nats" are back!  Same new and improved format of mixing up race types and harbour locations followed each day by C19 compliant gatherings, expert race debriefs and a wee party if we are allowed.

The committee took the decision  to  postpone  the Nats at the very start of the C19 shutdown and have decided to merge with the Owners Champs to ensure maximum participation and simplicity.   These dates avoid other events and are as late as we can go in the year to distance from C19 without being swamped by year end chaos.  Click here for more info

19/20 North Sails Young 88 Sprints

October to March

The Young 88s is always the largest one design keelboat fleet at Bay of Islands Sailing Week and this year they broke their own record with nine boats. The close racing attracts world class sailors – for 2020, Gavin Brady with his inevitably named Brady Bunch on his newly purchased Slipstream III handed the rest of the fleet a sailing lesson as they took every gun.

But wait there's more ....

Website members Toolkit Update

The site workers have been busy and added lots of great new stuff for potential, new and existing Young 88 owners. Documents and resources in the tool kit include:
  • Tuning guide
  • Crew playbook for procedures in manoeuvres
  • Generic syndicate agreement template
  • Working document for an 88 annual operating budget
  • Instructional rules videos
We are lucky to have a generally self-policed set of racing rules.
Remember its better to lodge a protest instead of complaining about infringements!
