GIJN Weekly Bulletin -- Jan. 21, 2015

Online FOI tools have gone global, but how well do they really work? UK-based nonprofit mySociety, which makes the Alaveteli FOI platforms, took a hard look and came to some surprising conclusions about the sites' impact and who uses them. "While there may be some indication of improved transparency, there is no such movement towards accountability as yet," the report found. "Disclosure of documents is not sufficient to cause change." Can you guess the missing ingredient? See highlights of the report here.
More than 100 countries now have freedom of information laws. Many are poorly used or enforced, but others have provided a gold mine of documents and data for journalists. As part of GIJN's Resource Center, we've assembled a guide to using FOI laws around the world. Newly updated, the page lists access points, guides, and how-to sites for 37 countries.
