Global Conference Draws Journos from Record 121 Countries

Wow, what a conference! Thanks to everyone who helped make the 9th Global Investigative Journalism Conference such a success. We had 950 participants from a record 121 countries, 170 sessions, 8000 tweets, and coverage in at least 14 languages. Energy was high as muckrakers from around the world shared stories, tips, and ideas to collaborate. Check out the dozens of tip sheets, videos, photos, and stories from #GIJC15.  

Shining Light Winners Announced

Winners of the sixth Global Shining  Light Award were announced at the Global Conference, honoring investigative reporting under threat or duress in developing and transitioning countries. Check out the video of impressive finalists. Big congrats to the winners: Unholy Alliances,” on Montenegro as a Mafia state, by OCCRP; “Empire of Ashes,” by Brazil’s Gazeta do Povo, on tobacco smuggling; and YanukovychLeaks, on corruption of Ukraine’s ex-president.

GIJC15 Journalists Demand End to Attacks, Impunity

The plenary session of GIJC15 focused on investigative journalists fighting back against growing attacks worldwide. In a stirring moment, after hearing about colleagues in Angola, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, and Mexico, attendees from 121 countries stood together to endorse a Declaration on Journalist Safety, demanding that governments do more to stop attacks and end impunity among the attackers.

GIJN Picks Joburg for GIJC17,      Re-Elects Board 

GIJN members have voted to hold the next global gathering for the first time in Africa. Members also re-elected the current seven board members up for election this year. The conference will be held in Johannesburg in 2017, hosted by the Investigative Journalism Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand, sponsor of Africa’s annual investigative reporting conference, Power Reporting.
