1st Asian Investigative Conference, GIJN joins GFMD, and More

First Asian Investigative Journalism Conference

Mark your calendars! Uncovering Asia: The 1st Asian Investigative Journalism Conference is on the way. Join us in Manila on November 22-24 for this breakthrough event, bringing together top investigative reporters, data journalists, and media law and security experts from across Asia and around the world. Uncovering Asia is hosted by GIJN, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, with additional support from the Open Society Foundations and Google. Media sending 5 people or contributing US$5,000 will become a co-sponsor. More to come soon on our venue, program, registration, and special events.

Sneak Peak at Conference Program

Uncovering Asia will mark two important occasions: a special reception honoring the 25th anniversary of the pioneering Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, and a candle-light march on the UN-designated International Day to End Impunity.

Workshops include:
  • Advanced online search techniques by Internet sleuth Paul Myers of the BBC.
  • Tracking business across borders with Investigative Dashboard by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.
  • Uncovering hidden assets with the Offshore Leaks Database of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
  • Advanced Google Tools, including searches, mapping, and public data with the New York-based Google for Media Team.
Already speakers from 14 countries have signed up, including many of the world's top trainers in investigative and data journalism. The official hashtag of the event is: #IJAsia14.

GIJN Joins Global Media Development Forum

GIJN has joined the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), a membership network of more than 200 media assistance organizations active in 80 countries. The Brussels-based GFMD works to make independent media development an integral part of international development strategies, much as education and health care are today. Among GFMD’s current priorities is working to ensure that access to information, independent media, and freedom of expression are included in the UN’s post-2015 development agenda. The GFMD has put together a tool kit and resource page on what you can do to help the campaign.
