4th Annual TDL Summit a Success

For the fourth consecutive year, the TDL Council brought together South Carolina’s top leaders from the transportation, distribution and logistics industry for the TDL Summit, the annual event that has become synonymous with  South Carolina’s TDL industry.

This year’s event, held April 24 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, drew a record crowd of more than 200 attendees. The day began with remarks by Governor Haley.



Inaugural Leadership Insurance Course Underway

iTslSC, the Insurance, Technology and Services cluster of the Midlands, launched the inaugural Leadership Insurance course on April 15th at BlueCross BlueShield. Leadership Insurance is an 8-part course designed to provide a forum for the rising stars of the local industry to connect, collaborate, learn and grow. 

Participants in the program will learn about all aspects of insurance - including ethics, marketing, underwriting, claims, and more - and also gain a deeper understanding of the technology employed by the industry. In addition to networking with other participants and gaining industry knowledge, the participants will be working on a project for the duration of the course. 


Charleston's Creative Cluster has $3.2 Billion Impact

A new economic impact study shows significant growth in Charleston’s Creative Cluster, “Parliament,” over the past four years. A group of artists and architects, software companies and fashion designers, acclaimed authors and actors, poets and journalists, musicians and production designers, directors and web designers, Parliament has a total economic impact of $3.2 billion on the Charleston Metropolitan Area (Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties).


Dr. Peggy Torrey Named Director of Education and Workforce Initiatives

Dr. Peggy Torrey, Director of TransformSC, has been named the Director of Education and Workforce Initiatives for New Carolina. Dr. Torrey will remain the Director of TransformSC and will oversee all activities of the Education and Workforce Development Task Force (EDTF).



Gearing up for Success:  How TransformSC Schools Aim to Personalize Education

The conversation about transformation at Saluda Trails Middle School began last October when TransformSC Steering Committee member and business leader Jim Reynolds gave a presentation to the faculty.  Principal Brenda Campbell then incentivized teachers to try something new by offering additional professional development and flexibility to implement a new practice in the classroom, including the freedom to create a new schedule. 


Regional Education Centers Move to Department of Commerce

The Education and Economic Development Act of 2005 (EEDA), created the “Personal Pathways to Success” initiative to empower youth and strengthen economic development by connecting their aspirations to careers.  Twelve Regional Education Centers (RECs) were established throughout South Carolina to bring action to the Personal Pathways initiative.  The RECs were originally placed under the purview of the Education and Economic Development Coordinating Council, but on April 7, 2014, Governor Haley signed a bill transferring the RECs to the Department of Commerce. 


Colleton County Certified as State's Third Work Ready Community

Colleton County recently became South Carolina’s third county to receive the South Carolina Work Ready Community designation.  The County received the title because of its work to strengthen and expand economic development in the community. It met all of its workforce and educational goals by using a community-based approach in order to become work ready.


Technical Colleges Focus Training for Growing Nuclear Industry

Aiken Technical and Midlands Technical colleges have developed training programs to help enhance the nuclear industry’s education and workforce development. The programs come at a time when SCE&G and Southern Co. are adding reactors to their respective facilities in Fairfield County and Waynesboro, G.A.

South Carolina's pro-business environment and skilled workforce has helped boost economic growth throughout the state but come September, the federal highway trust fund will diminish. Consequently, this could leave a huge impact on the condition of our roads and infrastructures and South Carolina's economic development if investments are not made.

Duke Energy Hopes to Bring Aerospace Industry to Pee Dee

According to the South Carolina Department of Commerce, South Carolina is home to over 180 aerospace-related companies employing more than 20,000 people.  Duke Energy and Pee Dee officials hope to create more aerospace jobs at a nearly 440-acre site at the Florence Regional Airport.


CEO Survey Ranks SC 5th

South Carolina rose from 8th to 5th in Chief Executive magazine’s annual survey. CEOs named the state’s growing aerospace industry and the ability “to boost highway infrastructure spending without penalizing business” as key factors in the rankings.


Santee Cooper Aims to Increase Economic Development Across South Carolina 


Santee Cooper signed off on a new rate in order to help new or expanding industries by offering them savings on their electric bills. The new rate could potentially lower power bills by as much as 30 percent for large industries.  Additionally, the Moncks Corner-based agency's board of directors approved two grant programs totaling $42.5 million to recruit industry throughout South Carolina.

2014 SC Clean Energy Summit

The 2014 SC Clean Energy Summit will feature eight high level moderated sessions focusing on the clean energy topics which matter most- policy, development, economic development and emerging technologies, and will include over three hours of facilitated networking time for all attendees.
