It's actually quite simple. Without David P. Billington's book "The Tower and the Bridge" and the lectures he based it on, Structurae would not exist today. When I was a student at Princeton 20 years ago his lectures made an immense impression on me. So now that Structurae belongs to a German publishing house it seems only fitting that Ernst & Sohn is preparing a German translation of that very book. A Spanish translation was recently completed as well. While it seems a bit moot to announce a German translation in an English-language newsletter, this e-mail presents you with the original and quite unique book. One that any civil, structural or bridge engineer should read as well as those aspiring to be.

Prof. Manfred Curbach member of  Leopoldina

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Manfred Curbach, Professor of Reinforced Concrete Structures at Technical University Dresden/Germany, has been appointed to the Leopoldina, Germany's National Academy of Sciences.

As one of the leading scientists in the development of textile reinforced concrete Prof. Curbach has been Speaker for a number of Collaborative Research Centres of the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 1999.
