The Path - An Interview with Tim Keel

Why did you use the title “The Path" for this series?
The most obvious reason is because in the gospels, Jesus is regularly inviting people to follow him. Jesus went from place to place, teaching, preaching, and doing various signs. The disciples followed him on his path as he announced and inaugurated the kingdom of God. That path was certainly transformational for his followers and, in fact, transformational for the world. And we are still being invited to follow, to learn the ways of Jesus, to participate with him as he transforms and renews all creation. We are called on to the same path as those first disciples!

Can you share a specific example of how "the path" operated in your life?
That’s a great question. Looking back at it, I think the path is mostly discernible after you’ve walked a ways along it. When I was growing in my faith (I hope I still am!), the steps on the path were less obvious. What was obvious were the people I met who guided me and helped me to know, love, and submit to God at critical junctures along the way.

Update on Rosedale Ridge

Rosedale RidgeRecently, both The Kansas City Star and KCUR's Central Standard cast a spotlight on the situation unfolding at Rosedale Ridge Apartments, where Jacob's Well has been involved the last couple years. JW's own Kara Bollinger wrote for the Star about her experience volunteering with children at the Rosedale after-school program. This month will likely be JW's last month to offer programming on site, as residents begin to relocate to other housing facilities in the KC metro and beyond. To read more about all that's transpired at Rosedale in the last many months, visit JW's Justice blog

(continued from above)
What do you think hinders people from moving forward on the path?
Well, there is always the constraints of time and competing priorities. Discipleship is not an add-on to an otherwise good life. It is life. We prioritize what we value and we value what we think will make us happy. God operates along a different continuum of value. We are invited to life—real life—and becoming oriented to God’s ways means an investment and even some divestment! Connected to that is sin. Sin will certainly hinder us on the path. But the great news is that God’s love and faithfulness is greater than our sin. If we invite God to work and stay open to his movement in our lives, we are forgiven and our hearts are slowly transformed. We even begin to desire new and life-giving realities. Finally, not knowing what the next step is, or even better, who can help you take the next step can hinder our movement on the path.

What do could next steps on the path look like?
As I mentioned, sometimes what’s needed is to know the next step. But often, it’s knowing the next “who”—connecting to a guide who can walk alongside us as we navigate the path. You know, there are some very practical things happening in June at Jacob’s Well that can help to connect us with some such people and steps. Pastor Shayne Wessel will be leading a men’s discipleship group and together they are going to journey through Mark’s gospel. Pastor Jessi Marcus is going to be leading an Institute class on prayer that should be great. Additionally, in worship through the summer, we will be following the lectionary, using the gospel passage each week to frame the sermon. We’ve created a summer Bible reading guide so that people who want to be in the scriptures during the week can interact with the same texts we will be preaching from on that coming Sunday.

Why do you feel JW needs this encouragement at this time?
I think it is always important to talk about the invitation to follow Jesus and the practical ways that gets worked out in our lives. But The Path series has also been about leadership. It’s my conviction that discipleship always moves us toward leadership, which is to say, responsibility, influence, and service in the name of Jesus. How do we continue to invite people along the path that we’ve been describing? Becoming members of God’s family? Growing as disciples, servants, and friends of God? Deacons? Elders? These are all steps that not only cause us to mature in our personal discipleship but also make us companions and co-workers with God in the larger work of the gospel in the world around us. I am super excited to invite more people into that work and to recognize and support those who are already fully engaged.
