BRIAN BOWES
Illustrator Highlight

A professor of illustration at the Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD), Brian Bowes is known for creating a world view rich with vibrant watercolors and expressive characters.  His signature style is whimsical, magical and character-driven, with narrative watercolors that shine with storytelling, draftsmanship, and creativity. Enter Brian’s authorial illustrator debut, GROM:

Interior from GROM (currently on submission)

"I like things that are entertaining, compelling, or menacing," Brian says with a giggle. We hope you will find his work as compelling as we do!  Speaking of: Read about Brian's process—from sketch to final product—as he paints this Bo Diddley piece.

Most notably, Brian’s work has been featured in the high-end art book The Story of the Fisherman (Foolscap Press). This letterpress hand bound and hand colored limited edition, based on the Arabian Nights story, is housed in the U.S. Library of Congress collection (Rare Book and Special Collections Division), as well as in numerous other university and private libraries around the world. The Story of the Fisherman evolved both as a story of words and, at the same time, a story told in graphic art form. Due to the accordion fold pull-out sectional binding, the book can be opened to display the story in images and the reader will discover visual connections between the linked illustrations.

Before becoming a professor, Brian served as the Youth Education Director for the Santa Cruz Mountains Art Center’s Art After School program. He holds a B.F.A. from the California College of the Arts and Crafts, and an M.F.A. from the University of Hartford, both in Illustration. He lives in Savannah, GA.
