Dear Tourism alumni,

Breda University of Applied Sciences (formerly known as NHTV Breda) marks its 55th anniversary this year. I realise that I have only just started. Still, in my first 120+ days as president of the Executive Board, I have discovered a lot.
I saw the many opportunities of collaboration with the industry, met lots of new enthusiastic colleagues who work here a long time already and said goodbye to our strategic mind Jan Bergsma.  Read here his full foreword.

Goodbye to a strategic mind

Many graduates will know Jan Bergsma. He started in front of a classroom, as lecturer in Tourism Planning and he ended up as a strategic advisor to the Executive Board. Thursday 11 March marked his retirement. That’s why our president of the Executive Board got to talk to him and he was overjoyed with his treasure chest full of experiences. Read the full interview here.

Growing together

Whereas in the past students came into contact with the professional field mostly through work placements, those contact opportunities have now been greatly expanded. Watch this video to find out more about the various options for cooperation and if you get inspired, just get in touch to partner up with us!

Then and now

Our institute marks its 55th anniversary this year. An occasion we would have liked to celebrate with an event for alumni on our campus. Unfortunately, we will have to shelve that for now. Instead, here are some then-and-now photos for you to enjoy!

‘You can have any opinion you like, as long as you can substantiate it’

We asked alumnus Menno Raams how he experienced his studies at BUas. Read his story here.

Social impacts of tourism

In the past few months several people from the Academy for Tourism at BUas have been working on a study commissioned by Gastvrij Nederland. Find out about this study here

First graduates of 2021!

Congratulations, welcome to the BUas Tourism Alumni Family! We wish you all the best in your future careers! Check out here who graduated recently.

Do men travel differently than women?

You have already seen them in previous alumni newsletters: Brigitte Ars, lecturer at BUas, adventure life expert and founder of platform AliceGoesWild.nl and Martijn Smeenge, lecturer as well as blogger for Reismannen.nl. Together they made a podcast themed ’Do men travel differently than women?’.  A fascinating conversation about this topic (Dutch only). Listen to the podcast here!

Let the anticipatory fun begin!

How do you prepare yourself for the summer holidays?
In these strange times it might be complicated to plan your holidays. We asked our Experience Lab researcher Ondrej Mitas for ten tips on planning a holiday in pandemic conditions. Check out his tips here.  Have you already booked your holiday? Let us know! We will share the results in the Tourism Alumni group on LinkedIn, so make sure to join this group!

Remember her? Wesley Put – van den Beemt!

Since 2008 Wesley has worked at the Tourism programme. This year she was nominated as Lecturer of the Year. Read more here.
