VCU School of Social Work
New Year, same mission
Dear SSW alumni,

As we — thankfully — turn our calendars to a new year and the prospects it brings, we are still only halfway through an academic year that has seen no letdown in pace or mission-relevant activities. That welcome sense of normalcy in abnormal times was most evident as we celebrated our December graduates, including the first cohort from our fully online M.S.W. program that launched in fall 2019.

Just days ago, the Society for Social Work and Research held its annual conference, which included nearly 30 virtual presentations or posters by 14 VCU faculty members and nine Ph.D. students, candidates and postdocs, including four with students as first authors.

In November, the Council on Social Work Education recognized Rebecca J. Gomez, Ph.D., our new associate dean for academic and student affairs, with its Distinguished Recent Contributions to Social Work Education Award at the Annual Program Meeting. In addition, three faculty members and two Ph.D. students participated in CSWE’s virtual conference.

The experience that Ph.D. students get as research collaborators with our faculty and as conference presenters is invaluable to their progress and future careers. To that end, we can also celebrate the successful dissertation defense by Anna Cody, Ph.D. (B.S.W.’05/SW), in November and our candidates on the job market, including Cody: Tommy Buckley, Kimberly Compton (M.S.W.’13/SW; Cert.’13/GPA), Claire Luce, Laura Swan and Keith Watts.

As noted below, our faculty researchers (associate professor Sunny Shin, Ph.D., and assistant professors Jamie Cage, Ph.D., and Nicole Corley, Ph.D.) continue with impactful and cross-disciplinary work, this time in the area of preventing adverse childhood experiences and trauma.

Finally, as we look ahead to Social Work Month in March, help us highlight one (or more!) of your fellow alumni (you can also nominate yourself). This is a new and year-round opportunity to showcase the valuable and varied work our alumni do.
