Two Exhibits Open at North Dakota Heritage Center
Bismarck, ND — The Smithsonian’s “Green Revolution,” an eco-friendly museum exhibit addressing global issues concerning the health of our planet, is open at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum during regular museum hours. This free exhibit was temporarily closed and enhanced with additional content, and will be on display through April 30, 2017.
“Green Revolution” is designed to create conversation about personal choices in sustainability and to provide simple ways to participate in protecting the environment. The national exhibit themes focus on making personal choices, recycling, reusing, ideas to make homes greener, and more. The State Historical Society of North Dakota has added examples of green practices of citizens and industries in our state.
Traveling exhibitions are typically packed into crates and moved by trucks to museums across the country. “Green Revolution,” however, is an innovative museum exhibit with little carbon footprint. Participating museums receive all design files and instructions digitally, allowing museum professionals to construct personalized, homegrown "eco-zibits" from re-used, recycled materials found within their local communities. The State Historical Society of North Dakota re-used the backs of former exhibit panels, built displays from salvaged wood, and repurposed old display cases to help create this exhibit.
This version of “Green Revolution” is based on an exhibition originally created by the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, and its Black Creativity Council, and made available by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
An additional free exhibit, “The Peak of Power: The Nonpartisan League 100 Years Ago,” is now open in the James E. Sperry Gallery of the North Dakota Heritage Center. This exhibit, created by State Archives, includes documents and photographs highlighting the 100 year history of the Nonpartisan League. “The Peak of Power” will be open through July 2017.
The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum and these exhibits are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit history.nd.gov.
