Germans from Russia Foodways Presentation Set For June 19
STRASBURG – The public is invited to “Sit Down and Eat: An Invitation to Dinner, or, How Germans from Russia Shared Love Through Cooking” on June 19 at 2 p.m. at the Welk Homestead State Historic Site near Strasburg. Presented by Sue B. Balcom of Mandan, the free program will take a look at the foods of one of the largest ethnic groups in North Dakota.
Long-lived hardworking Germans from Russia turned flour and water into today’s sought-after dough foods without recipes to guide them. Attendees will learn about foodways of the Germans from Russia and enjoy tales told through vintage kitchen utensils along with stories from the Tri-County Tourism cultural preservation interviews of women and men from Emmons County, Logan County, and McIntosh County.
Balcom is the author of “Ewiger Saatz: Everlasting Yeast” and “Ready for School: Memories of Country Schools in North Dakota.” Her third book, scheduled for release in late 2016, is based on the photo exhibit “Women Behind the Plow” that is currently touring the state.
The Welk Homestead is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Summer hours are Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Diane Rogness at 701.328.3508 or visit history.nd.gov.
