National Exhibit Opening at North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum

BISMARCK – On Nov. 21, the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck will debut Green Revolution, an eco-friendly exhibit with a minimal carbon footprint. Green Revolution addresses critical issues concerning the future health of our planet. This free, family-friendly exhibit will be on display through spring 2017.
 
Through hands-on activities and historic objects, visitors will gain awareness of sustainability and learn simple ways to help protect our air, water, soil, and environment. Special areas focus on renewable energy, water usage, food choices, and reducing waste. Displays provide practical tips on how to “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” Visitors can learn the effects of climate change on ecosystems and explore learning modules that show how to improve our earth. The State Historical Society of North Dakota has personalized the exhibit by adding historic examples of North Dakota sustainability such as clothing made from flour sacks.
 
Traveling museum exhibitions are typically packed into crates and moved by trucks to museums across the country. Green Revolution, however, is an innovative museum exhibit with virtually no carbon footprint. Participating museums receive all design files and instructions digitally, allowing museum professionals to construct personalized, home grown "eco-zibits" from re-used, recycled materials found within their local communities. For this display, State Historical Society staff searched through storage closets, dumpsters, and even grandma’s basement to assemble components. This version of Green Revolution is based on an exhibition originally created by the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, and made available by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
 
The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum and this exhibit are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information visit history.nd.gov.
