Welcome to your September edition of Local Church, Global Difference.
Let’s all take a moment to acknowledge that things are tough out there.
Often we move so fast that we don’t take the time to catch up with ourselves. So take a few seconds now. Breathe in. Feel it. Maybe close your eyes for a little while.
God is close to us. Close to us in these moments. Close to us in the hard times. When it feels as though our spirits are flagging, God is right there, holding us up (Psalm 34:18).
We know how tricky and busy things are at this time of year. Christmas really does come early if you work in a church (at least the preparation does!). So we want to make it as easy as possible for you to connect your congregation with our work.
We’ve got loads of resources lined up that will help your church to pray, act and give to transform the lives of people living in extreme poverty around the world.
Today, that includes a prayer guide for Pakistan, new Christmas resources, a video update from an exciting project in Haiti, and plenty more.
This has been the summer of extreme weather.
The UK has seen record-breaking temperatures and drought. Europe and the US have been experiencing cataclysmic wildfires. And unprecedented flooding has left a third of Pakistan underwater, leading the Disasters Emergency Committee to recently launch an emergency appeal.
This is the reality of the climate crisis. And it’s a reality that our neighbours in the global south have been experiencing for many years – with far greater consequences than we have faced so far.
Around a million homes have been destroyed or damaged in Pakistan. Crops, livestock, businesses, roads and bridges have been swept away. It’s created a humanitarian crisis on a colossal scale.
It can be hard to know how to respond, but prayer is powerful – and it makes a difference. We produced this online guide to help you and your church pray for the people of Pakistan.
Work on our Christmas resources is well underway, and we’ll be able to get them to you in plenty of time for you to plan ahead.
We believe that the church can be a powerful force for restoring peace in communities around the world. And that’s what this year’s Christmas Appeal is all about – giving your church the opportunity to bring peace to the hearts of people affected by conflict and poverty. We all know that young people are the future. But in Haiti, young Christians have been proving that they can make a powerful difference in the present.
Watch and share this video update from Marc Antoine, who led Tearfund’s work in Haiti, as he talks about an innovative youth-led project that’s transforming communities.
We’re always mindful here at Tearfund to keep you in our prayers. Local churches like yours are an essential part of who we are, and we couldn’t be more grateful for your partnership – especially during these challenging times.
Yours in Christ,
