Free Movies Including "West Side Story" at ND Heritage Center & State Museum

BISMARCK—The public is invited to attend four free films based on Shakespeare’s plays each Tuesday in July at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, 612 E. Boulevard Ave., Bismarck. The film screenings are presented in conjunction with the "First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare" exhibit on view in the James E. Sperry Gallery July 6-31. The first film, “West Side Story,” will be shown at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. July 5 in the Russell Reid Auditorium. A discussion after the 7 p.m. screening will be led by Daniel Devlin, assistant professor of theater at Bismarck State College.
 
The 1961 movie musical “West Side Story” is a film adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical based on William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet.” Winner of 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, “West Side Story” was directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise and features a musical score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. The film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as two teenagers caught in a turf war between rival gangs in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood; the Jets and the Sharks are a 20th century update of the feuding Montagues and Capulets. “West Side Story” runs 152 minutes and is unrated, containing mild profanity and violence.
 
Other free film screenings include “Romeo and Juliet” on July 12, “Macbeth” on July 19, and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on July 26. All films will be shown at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. in the Russell Reid Auditorium. A discussion will follow the 7 p.m. screenings of “Romeo and Juliet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and the 3 p.m. screening of “Macbeth.”
