Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site to Host Programs

FORT ABERCROMBIE – The Fort Abercrombie Historical Authors and Crafters Expo will be August 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fort Abercrombie.  Authors and crafters will be selling handcrafted items and books. Authors Candace Simar, Joel Arnold, and Vernal Lind will be available for book signings and sales.

1862 Blacksmith Michael Quade will demonstrate the craft of blacksmithing, while Michael Larson of the 5th Minnesota Infantry Company D will be demonstrating Dutch Oven cooking. The 5th Minnesota Infantry Company D will make a historic march from the 1862 crossing at Crooked Lane Farm to Fort Abercrombie commemorating the ending of the Civil War and the turning of Fort Abercrombie back to regular army troop units in 1865, after being occupied by volunteer troops during the Civil War. The Eagle Valley Youth Group will provide concessions. Fort Abercrombie is seeking additional historical authors and crafters for the Expo. For more information or to register, call 701.553.8513.

On Sunday, August 2 at 2 p.m., historical fiction authors Candace Simar and Joel Arnold will be guest speakers during the Sunday History Program. Award winning author Candace Simar has authored several novels set against the backdrop of the Dakota War of 1862 and Fort Abercrombie. Joel Arnold will present about his award winning novel, Ox Cart Angel. The Fort Abercrombie Men's Group will perform, accompanied by Evonne VIlland.  The Sunday History Program is free and open to the public.

Monday, August 3 will be the final Junior Soldiers Program for the summer. The free, hour-long program begins at 10 a.m. Children of all ages can learn about Fort Abercrombie and life on the western frontier, play old fashioned games, listen to exciting stories, and complete activities. Fort Abercrombie staff member Barb Myhre will be instructor.

Fort Abercrombie Historic Site, managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota, is open daily 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May 23 to Labor Day.  For more information, contact Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site Supervisor Lenny Krueger at 701.553.8513.
