From the Principal's Desk

I’d like to welcome back our 150 students and their families for the 2014-15 School Year.  This number includes 21 new families.

The School has an exciting year on tap with the announcement of a Campaign for Notre Dame School.  The goals of the campaign are to renovate the existing facility to a state-of-the-art building which will include reconfigured classroom spaces, a more secure front entrance, a new elevator, as well as technology and transportation upgrades.  Additionally we will be raising money to help grow our endowment which will reduce our dependence on annual fundraising.

Notre Dame School continues to be blessed by a supportive parent and philanthropic community.  The future for our students could not look brighter!
- Theresa Francis
Notre Dame School is blessed by many foundations and organizations that give often and generously to our school.  One of those organizations is the Alhambra Dar-Al Ruse.
It’s an interesting name for a charitable group of Catholic men.  The Alhambra Dar-Al Ruse was established over 40 years ago.  Their mission was to “assist God’s special children”.  They began working with the Notre Dame School, under the direction of Sister Barbara Kraus, School Sisters of Notre Dame, and former principal.
At that time, the Notre Dame School was housed on the campus of the University of Dallas.   As the university grew, Notre Dame School had to relocate.  Although Alhambra Dar-Al Ruse had supported Notre Dame for many years, it was this event that strengthened the relationship of Alhambra Dar Al-Ruse and Notre Dame School.
“I asked Sister Barbara – ‘How are you going to move all this stuff?’” recalled Joseph Saar, Grand Chamberlain of Alhambra Dar Al-Ruse.  Sister Barbara estimated a few parents with trucks might do the job.   Mr. Saar had other ideas. Through the network of his organization, three North American Van Lines 18-wheelers arrived.  In the end, they made three trips with three 18-wheelers.  A much bigger job than Sister Barbara had anticipated!  This effort saved the school over $25,000 in moving costs.
But the men of Alhambra Dar-Al Ruse didn’t stop there.  There was much work to be done in the new location.  They cleaned out all the classrooms, pulling up old carpet and discarding old furniture, which was then piled in the playground while the asbestos was removed from the building.  At that point, Mr. Saar saw another need, and he called another friend.  Trash dumpsters arrived and removed all the trash, allowing the playground to be ready for the start of school in 1989.
As the partnership between Notre Dame School and the Alhambra Dar Al-Ruse continued to grow, the men decided to sponsor the annual Christmas party.  “It’s the highlight of my year.  I enjoy being at the Notre Dame Christmas party and seeing the smiling faces of the children,” said Mr. Saar.  And if he receives a hug from one of those kids, well, that’s a bonus!
As often happens, the word spread of the needs at the Notre Dame School and the unique education that was offered.  The women of the auxiliary group of Alhambra Dar-Al Ruse, the Sultanas, also became involved.  Following the lead of their associates, the Sultanas have also made significant financial contributions to the Notre Dame School and the annual Christmas party.
Due to it’s aging membership, the Alhambra Dar Al-Ruse disbanded after 40 years of serving special-needs children.  But they have taken measures to ensure that the spirit of this fine organization continues at Notre Dame School for a few more years ahead. “All Theresa has to say is that they need some help, and we will be there,” said Mr. Saar.
Saar and his wife have taken a personal interest in the efforts at the Notre Dame School, outside the Alhambra Dar-Al Ruse.  “We have no children, so all of our estate will go to education.  And Notre Dame School will be the biggest beneficiary,” says Saar.  “The good Lord gives it you, and He expects you to give back.”
On September 18, 2014 we saw record numbers of donors "Get Up and Give" on North Texas Giving Day! It was the Sixth Annual event for North Texas and the Notre Dame School has participated every year. "We are grateful throughout the year for our generous donors, but to see so many give to Notre Dame School on one day of the year is amazing,” said Theresa Francis, principal of Notre Dame School.
Notre Dame School received over $50,000 from 120 donors within the 18-hour period allotted for North Texas Giving Day. This is more than a $10,000 increase from last year. Proceeds will go towards our operating budget.
Thank you to the many NDS family members, community members and NDS staff who contributed this year!

Students are enjoying their experience at the Frontiers of Flight Museum.  Their main job is to keep the exhibits and showcases clean.  Some of the exhibits are located in the planes, so that is really fun for the students.

Hilton Anatole Hotel – Grand Ballroom

Preparation for our annual gala, An Affair of the Heart, is underway.  In addition to our amazing community supporters, we always look forward to having a few tables full of our current Notre Dame parents!

Tables for ten with preferential seating can be reserved for $2,500. This includes a seated dinner, live and silent auctions, dancing and casino.  It’s a fun evening for a great cause!  As you know, our annual tuition covers less than half of the actual cost of education at NDS.  Proceeds from An Affair of the Heart help to fund the difference between the tuition and the actual cost of this outstanding education.  So please consider attending and supporting this great event!
