DNR acknowledged our letter
Concerning the DNR's proposal to purchase property at the end of Reinhardt Rd for a boat launch, Richard Hill, District Supervisor, DNR, acknowledged our July 14, 2014, letter.  The letter began with, “The Douglas Lake Improvement Association (DLIA) is against the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) purchasing property on Douglas Lake and developing a DNR designed boat launch facility.”  Along with our letter, we included all the comments from our membership.  Member names were removed before sending.

On July 21, 2014, Richard said in an email, “Thanks for passing this along …. Keith, Dave and I will review the comments and follow up with you.”  Keith Cheli is the DNR Regional Field Planner and Dave Stempky is the DNR Cheboygan Field Office Manager.

Our letter was addressed to Richard Hill, and copies were sent to additional DNR personnel, Cheboygan County Road Commission, Cheboygan County Planning and Zoning, Munro Township, U of M Biological Station, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, and various DLIA members.

The DNR requested a state appraisal of the property which is expected to happen by the end of July. There is no further update at this time.

Help children learn the value of reading
Pellston Elementary needs books for pre-school and kindergarten children. You can help in 3 ways.

1.    McLean and Eakin has a “Pellston Wish List” for pre-school and kindergarten level books. The books range in price from $5-$18.  They will be sold at a 20% discount.  Purchase in person or call 231-347-1180.  The books will be picked up from the store by one of the project members and delivered to Pellston. (Note: Since there is a 20% discount, purchases from the "Pellston Wish List" do not count toward the "Buy 10 books, get a $10 coupon" program.)

2.    McLean and Eakin has an existing program in which 10% of ANY other purchase will be donated to an area school of your choice – please choose Pellston Elementary.

3.    Book Exchange. They are looking for gently used books appropriate for pre-school and kindergarten children.  The students will be able to take these books home and return them for another book.  Picture books are welcome even if the reading level is higher.  We will collect donations at Book Club, DL Womenade, or from your home. Just call 231-537-2189 or email gailbeav@umich.edu

Encourage your friends, neighbors, and groups to purchase and donate.

Thank you from the entire DL Womenade group, and thank you to Sharon Anderson, Jill Francis and Gail Beaver for working on this invaluable project.

(This is a non-DLIA program.)
