The 2019 Canterbury Health in All Policies (HiAP) Annual Report is now available.  The report highlights examples of Canterbury’s approach to implementing a HiAP approach over the last year, the strength of the partnerships and the wide scope of the areas of focus.
While the focus of the report is on last year, 2019, we acknowledge that we are currently facing a global health crisis. As the gravity of the COVID-19 outbreak unfolds, it’s clear that a whole of society response is required.

HiAP is often seen as a strategic response to non-communicable diseases. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the intersectoral relationships needed to advance a HiAP approach are equally of value when facing crisis health issues.  Organisations are working together in sometimes unprecedented ways to protect and support the population, especially people at heightened risk for medical complications from the virus.

Equity is a core value of a HiAP approach. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is also an equity issue. It is important to consider vulnerability through the lens of the social determinants of health, which influence daily resilience and can exacerbate the impacts of covid-19. The COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the economy and health focus our attention on the critical need to strengthen the systems and structures that protect the most vulnerable and that communities need to thrive.
