MDA Financial Operations Update

MDA House of Delegates Members:

I would like to provide House of Delegates members with an update on the financial operations of the Michigan Dental Association. As of Aug. 31, the net income from budgeted operations totaled $876,282. This exceeds the budget net income figure of $130,982. The net income figure will be reduced as we proceed throughout the year, with a projected year end surplus that should compare favorably to the 2017 budget. The MDA Board Committee on Finance and MDA staff will continue to monitor the financial operations of the MDA to safeguard member dues dollars.

The MDA Board Committee on Finance recently completed preparation of the 2018 MDA budget. Compared to the 2017 budget, the budget that is being forwarded to the Board of Trustees includes a reduction in revenues of 1.29%, a reduction in expenses of 0.32%, and a budget surplus of $860, which fulfills the strategic planning objective for the passing of a surplus budget. The MDAIFG Dividend revenue line item was reduced significantly, however, increases in endorsed program royalties and sponsorships eliminated the majority of the shortage. The goal of the Board Committee on Finance is to reduce the dividend in future budgets, as this is the least beneficial way for MDAIFG to return dollars to the MDA.

House of Delegates members are being given the opportunity to review the budget prior to its submission to the Board of Trustees on Oct. 6. Please see the attached budget and submit any questions or concerns to me at by Wednesday, Oct. 4. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I am also willing to attend component society meetings to explain the MDA’s budget process.

MDA staff created a Performance Measures document that provides year-end comparisons of various activities of the MDA. The attached report includes a year-to-year comparison, a year-to-budget comparison and a five year historical perspective. Please review and let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Thank you for your time,

Robert Tremblay, DDS
MDA Secretary/Treasurer
