November 2018 - Hope of the City Newsletter
Hope October
Every year, Hope of the City designates the month of October as ‘volunteer-marathon’ month, where we line up a myriad of service opportunities to draw in new volunteers and give existing ones new avenues of involvement to explore. This year, 496 volunteers contributed a whopping 1,380 hours during Hope October, serving 816 beneficiaries through 34 events and activities. There were bowling and skating outings for kids from SSP, family cooking contests, a Chung Yeung Festival family day trip, weekly streetsleepers outreach, English tutoring and much more. We were delighted to see many new faces volunteering with us for the first time, serving energetically alongside our dedicated old hands. Read more about some especially impactful events in the following articles.

Get to know SSP
Student Tours
Eleven students from China Holiness College in Sham Shui Po got to show off their local knowledge and practise English at the same time on Oct 13 by serving as tour guides for 11 Hope volunteers. The teens and ‘tourists’ split into small groups to explore this fascinating district before sharing a pizza lunch. Then, on Oct 27, the same groups met up again, this time for a Sun Yat-sen themed scavenger hunt in Central/ Sheung Wan, complete with cool prizes.

Happiness on Ice
Plenty of frosty fun was in store for 20 kids from SSP and 11 Hope volunteers when they got together for a pair of skating sessions on Oct 6 and 20 in Taikoo Shing. Each two-hour session began with a 30-minute lesson, followed by 30 minutes of skating. Many slips and slides later, it was hard to tell who was having more fun, the little kids or the adult ones! Then it was off to McD’s for more bonding over breakfast.

Movie Laughs for the Elderly
Oct 27 was a Saturday to remember for 60 elderly when they visited Island for a morning at the movies. Peals of laughter rang out from the 10th floor worship hall as these seniors from Shek Kip Mei and Ngau Tau Kok, along with 63 home visit volunteers, munched on popcorn and took in a hilarious 1990s comedy. Following the movie, a scrumptious buffet lunch was served up by 14 superb Hope October volunteers, with sharing and songs provided by Kimman.

Food Drive Generosity
Over two Sundays in Oct, the 14th and 21st, Hope of the City held our annual Food Drive at Island ECC, on behalf of Feeding Hong Kong. With the holiday season almost in sight, it was the perfect time to ignite the giving spirit, and give you did! This year, those big red bins were filled to overflowing with 493 bottles of oil, 255 litres of UHT milk, 399 packs of noodles and an incredible 6.72 tons of rice! Thanks everyone!
