NYTHA NEWS BULLETIN: MAY, 2017

NYTHA “Meet and Greet” at Belmont Park June 3: The New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association will host a “Meet and Greet” at the NYTHA Office at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 3, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event will offer New York’s owners and trainers the chance to get to know the NYTHA Board and staff, as well as representatives of the organization’s benevolence partners. There will be refreshments and giveaways, including NYTHA golf jackets, while they last.

“We send out newsletters and have an active social media presence, but you can’t put a price on meeting people face to face,” said NYTHA President Rick Violette Jr. “We look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions in person, and to answering any questions you might have.”

To find the NYTHA Office, take the clubhouse elevator to the basement, and turn left, or call the office at (516) 488-2337 for directions.

“We hope our members will take the opportunity to stop in to see us June 3, but we welcome visitors any time,” NYTHA Executive Director Andy Belfiore added. “Our Belmont office is open every racing day and almost all dark days during the season. At Saratoga, you can find us in Cottage 31 next to Barn 26 on the main track. Please come by to say hello.”

NYTHA Safety Equipment Subsidy Program in Saratoga: Exercise riders who are based in Saratoga this spring can still take advantage of NYTHA’s Safety Equipment Subsidy Program. The Program was launched to ensure that all safety equipment worn by exercise riders – helmets and protective vests – meet current safety standards. Beginning June 1, 2017, safety equipment will be subject to random inspections by the New York State Gaming Commission. NYTHA provides a $125 voucher toward the purchase of each helmet and a $125 voucher toward the purchase of each vest that is defective or not up to code. In Saratoga, the vouchers can be picked up at the BEST Office in the Rec Hall on Union Ave. Downstate, exercise riders can stop by the NYTHA Office at Belmont Park or see Cristina Silva in the RTCA Office by Gate 6 at Belmont. They must present their badges, and the defective equipment must be turned in when the voucher is redeemed. The exercise rider is responsible for the balance due on the helmet or vest after the voucher is applied. The vouchers are not transferable, and there is a limit of one helmet and one vest voucher per person. VOUCHERS CANNOT BE USED TO PURCHASE EQUIPMENT THAT DOES NOT MEET SAFETY STANDARDS.

Trainer Continuing Education Courses Available On Line: There is an on-line option for trainers looking to fulfill the NYS Gaming Commission’s new requirement of four hours of Continuing Education credits annually. The Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit partnered with the North American Racing Academy (NARA) to create a free on-line educational program that offers five different courses, worth one hour of credit apiece:

Nutrition and Balanced Feed Programs
Introduction to Thoroughbred Risk and Protective Factors
Understanding the National Uniform Medication Program
The Hoof: Inside and Out
Understanding and Managing EHV-1

The program tracks participation, and will notify the NYS Gaming Commission upon completion of each course. For more information, or to enroll in the program, go to https://courses.grayson-jockeyclub.org/
