Summer 2020

Dear Team,

Thank you so much as many of you prayed for us, sent in supplies, gave towards our mentor drive or I Have a Dream event, and otherwise helped us to prepare for summer. You did it, we did it and, most importantly, God did it! We are back with our students for our summer program. Although it looks a little different from other years due to COVID19, we have 12 wonderful summer interns, our staff is refreshed and ready to be back and our students are excited to see us (on most days). In many ways summer is helping us continue to prepare to meet the needs of our students going forward as we hear announcements from the school systems about school in the fall. Please continue to pray for us for wisdom and ideas as our staff and board meet together in August to plan for the next school year to serve our families well. I hope everyone is staying safe and enjoying their summers!

Heather Goodlett, Founder and ED, YLFR

So many generous people and organizations have rallied around our students and centers this spring and summer! Huge thanks to...

  • Laura Agaba for taking Senior Photos for four of our recent graduates.
  • Sanna Peterson & Julia Stephenson for collecting books and games for our students to take home.
  • Mark Casper with Tech for Troops for giving computers for our centers and our families who needed one.
  • Partnership for Families Northside for donating office furniture and equipment.

  • Ellen Watford and Resurrection Disaster Relief for donating weekly groceries for our Remix families.
  • Ms. Preston from Pop, Hop, and Rock for leading recess activities at Northminster this summer.

  • TONS of supporters and mentors who donated supplies for us to start our summer program.

Sponsor a Mystery Trip or Box!

Normally at the end of summer program, we would be planning an overnight Mystery Trip for students with excellent behavior and consistent attendance all year. Though Covid has disrupted our travel plans this year, we still want to reward those students with a fun day out or special, personalized gift to enjoy! $100 will sponsor one student. Checks can be made payable to YLFR and sent to PO Box 15202, Richmond, VA 23227 or donate online below.

Learning Center Updates!

This summer Middle School Remix is studying the book of Esther, learning about seeing God's hand in every part of our being. It is imperative that our students learn the Gospel, but also get to learn about themselves. In the book of Esther, we see that it takes an entire year for Esther to be prepared to see the king. With that being said, we are taking the time to learn about ourselves as well.  This summer we are recording a series called #mynameis where we will be exploring personality traits, values, and career options! We are excited to continue exploring the scripture and growing together this summer.

Ms. Preston from Pop, Hop, and Rock has been so kind to the Northminster Learning Center by volunteering her time every day to do recess with the children. We really love Ms. Preston! Her ability to have fun and get the children moving while social distancing is incredible!

The Southwood crew has been easing our 13 students back into academic life with language arts and math, practicing English, reading through the Old Testament, and enjoying recess on beautiful summer mornings. They are all staying as safe as possible and are thankful for this time together.

This summer Miss Gwen is doing a 6 week financial education program with our recent graduates. They are learning everything from how to budget to early investment and how to buy a house!

The Delmont Learning Center has been blessed to have Lisa Eggert and Brenda Elliott from West End Assembly of God teaching Bible Monday-Thursday mornings. The students have been thrilled to see these familiar faces each week and have enjoyed learning about courage. They have had so much fun singing songs, playing games, and learning Bible stories each morning and we are so grateful to have them. Thank you, Lisa and Brenda!
