BSO Inspection Report

We are delighted to have had another very successful British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspection.   So please take the time to have a look at it.  The inspectors were extremely positive about the school and we are very pleased that the hard work and success of students, parents, staff and governors have been recognised.

As an accredited British School Overseas we are inspected every three years to ensure that we meet the standards required by the UK Department for Education and a report is produced to inform parents about how the standards at the BSA compare to those of some of the best independent schools in England.

The report indicates that we meet all the BSO standards and that the BSA is “a good school with many outstanding features”.
Highlights of the report include the following:
“Students feel secure and valued within the friendly mutually trustful learning environment that prevails.”
“Students are happy, polite and keen to learn.  They are thoughtful, well-behaved and treat each other with respect.”
“Relationships between teachers and students and students and students and their peers are outstanding and ensure that they feel happy and secure in their learning.”
“The school nurtures responsible students and is highly successful in meeting their social and personal needs.  They display a high level of self-awareness and self-confidence.”
“Students develop excellent attitudes towards learning”
“The quality of students’ personal awareness and their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding and a key strength of the school.”
“During the visit not one instance of inappropriate behaviour was observed.”
“Behaviour is exemplary throughout the school.”
“Cultural Awareness is excellent. Students show an awareness, appreciation and respect for each other, the wider world and other cultures.”
“The students value and respect the qualities of each other as individuals and contribute to a harmonious international family.”
“The effective implementation of the school’s anti-bullying policy ensures all students feel safe and secure.  Focus groups of students across the school stated that any unpleasantness is dealt with immediately and effectively.”
“A focus group of parents identified the disciplined, safe and caring environment as a strength of the school.”
“The school recruits staff of the highest calibre”
“The senior leadership team ……….. are uncompromising in their desire and drive to improve achievement for all students.”
“Great care is taken to ensure all students have opportunities to develop their personal and social skills.  Relationships at all levels are outstanding.  The school has a highly positive impact on student behaviour, in addition to their social, moral, spiritual and cultural development.”
“The school has established excellent strategies for engaging parents and carers and as a result, students’ learning is seen as a partnership between home and school.”
We are also pleased to announce that the British Ambassador to Egypt, Sir Geoffrey Adams KCMG, has agreed to be our new patron, when our current patron, HM Consul General of Alexandria, Mrs Wendy Freeman, leaves at the end of March.  We would like to thank Wendy Freeman for all her work and support of the BSA and wish her well in her new post in Grenada.

We were very grateful that Sir Geoffrey Adams took the time in his busy schedule to visit the BSA just before half-term break and we look forward to an equally successful relationship.

Cairo Trip in Y2

On the 14th of February, the amazing children and staff of Year 2 enjoyed an adventurous trip to Giza and Sakkara as we toured some of the impressive works of ancient Egyptians- The Pyramids! On this trip we utilised the privilege of learning about ancient Egyptians whilst living in Egypt as well as consolidating classroom learning. We most definitely enjoyed climbing down the tunnel into the tomb of King Teti in Sakkara where we saw real hieroglyphics and a grand sarcophagus! Despite the wind, It was a phenomenal experience. The children were so excited and it brought their learning to life! Many children talked about Howard Carter and how he and his colleagues must have felt scared and anxious due to the darkness and compared this to feelings of excitement and joy when they found Tutankhamun’s tomb.

The Year 2 team will like to use this moment to thank parents who gave consent and adhered to all necessary requirements for a successful trip.

Valentine's Prom in Senior School
On February 13th, we held our very first Valentine's Prom for Senior students in Nefertiti Villa.  The event was a huge success and a great time was had by everyone that attended.  A special thanks must go to the Student Council for all their effort in organising the event, particularly Sara and Nadia for orchestrating such a wonderful event. The decorations looked fantastic and very professional and this was due to all of their hard work. The event was held to raise money for charity, with over LE12,000 being raised and this will be put towards buying equipment for a local women's nursing home.

Model United Nations

‘Making the Leaders of Tomorrow’ was the theme of SASMUN Conference, 8th-9th March. Fourteen BSA delegates from Years 9 and 10 gave up their weekend to spend time debating topics such as how to provide refugees with access to education, finding solutions to cyber interference in democracy and protecting humanitarian workers. Delegates attending their first conference (Adine, Ahmed, Jana, Kareem, Lana, Lisa, Sherif and Ziad) overcame fears and showed good commitment. It was particularly delightful to see second time delegates Fadel, Hana, Jasmin, Matthew, Mimi and Yusuf confidently fulfilling their roles. The delegate for the UAE, Matthew Lever, was given a special mention for his attention to detail. Well done delegates!

Pearson Edexcel Awards

On Wednesday last week, I attended the Pearson Edexcel Outstanding Achievers Awards ceremony at the British Embassy in Cairo to see Haya Kassem in Year 12 receive an award for getting the highest mark in Africa for IGCSE History. This is a fantastic achievement and both her parents and I were extremely proud to see her receive this award. Here is a picture of Haya with the British Ambassador, Sir Geoffrey Adams who is also the patron of our school.
