VCU School of Social Work expands access to M.S.W. and brings home research awards

Dear alumni,

No one knows the rich history, values and accomplishments of the VCU School of Social Work better than you, our alumni. You have seen our school and the social work profession grow and evolve as we continue to meet changing client needs and face complex policy issues, close to home or globally. This is what it means to be a 21st century university and school of social work.
One exemplar of our vision, an initiative launched this fall with the start of classes, is expanding the online M.S.W. program from Virginia residents to students nationwide. By leveraging technology to create an in-depth and interactive curriculum and by increasing access to prospective students seeking more skills and knowledge, we are extending the reach of the VCU School of Social Work and helping advance the profession. In the coming months, we will share more details about how the curriculum works and mirrors the pedagogy of traditional classroom learning.

Our faculty members are also making headlines with major research initiatives that have received university funding. And we held the fifth version of our annual fall kickoff event, Richmond [Re]Visited, a look at the city’s racial history, which provides context for today’s social workers; this year’s theme focused on race and public health.

Your support is essential as we continue to excel in teaching, research and community engagement. In particular, we would love to see:
  • 100% alumni support and participation for our annual fund and scholarships, ensuring a strong pipeline of future social workers into our profession
  • Engagement, mentoring and networking between alumni and students to elevate the student experience
  • Increased opportunities for students and alumni to serve in and lead community agencies and initiatives, ensuring that social work values are always at the table when major policy decisions are made
As dean, I continue to be grateful for your generosity and passion for the VCU School of Social Work. I look forward to that ongoing commitment as we work together to keep the school a vital part of building the social work profession in the Richmond area and beyond.

For VCU,

Beth Angell
