Nursing students make service trip to aid Guatemalan villagers


Twenty members of Nursing Students Without Borders at VCU and two VCU School of Nursing faculty members traveled in January for health outreach to villagers in the Guatemala highlands, a center of indigenous people. The students discussed hypertension and diabetes for women and midwives and built stoves for Mayan families to help reduce the health risks associated with cooking over open fires. Read more.

VCU’s online nursing master’s program ranked No. 1 in Virginia, No. 45 in nation

The VCU School of Nursing has been ranked the top online nursing master’s program in Virginia and in the top 50 nationwide, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings. The school moved up from No. 3 last year in the state ranking and is tied at No. 45 nationally, having moved up from No. 97. View the rankings.

School of Nursing Alumni Award nomination deadline extended

The School of Nursing has five alumni awards that will be presented in 2020. Every year during Reunion Weekend, we recognize four alumni nominated by their peers for the Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award, Outstanding Nurse Practice Award, Outstanding Nurse Alumnus Award and the Outstanding Nurse Service Award.

We are pleased to announce a new award, the Paul A. and Veronica H. Gross Achievement in Nursing Award, that will be presented at the May 2020 graduation ceremony.

New scholarship honors nursing student

New scholarship honors nursing student

Kevin Michael Dodge was the epitome of a fighter. The Fairfax, Virginia, native completed his first semester at the VCU School of Nursing and made the dean’s list, despite a diagnosis of stage 4 lymphoma the summer before he started. He passed away in February 2005 after a two-year battle with cancer. To honor him and support the education of future nurses, his parents, Jim and Kathy Dodge, and sister, Alisa, contributed $26,000 to establish the Kevin Michael Dodge Memorial Scholarship at the VCU School of Nursing. 11:30 a.m. Feb. 12: “The Black Angels: A Nurse’s Story” screening
This documentary follows 300 black nurses who were hired during a tuberculosis outbreak in 1929. Producer Denetra Hampton will present the film and discuss how the film was made. Screening is free; lunch provided. Please RSVP to Amber Yancey (B.S.’07/H&S), alumni relations and stewardship specialist, at abyancey@vcu.edu by Friday, Feb. 7.

Registration is now open for the 2020 Reunion Weekend! If your graduation year ends in 0 or 5, or you are grand alumni or St. Philip alumnae, come celebrate your years at the School of Nursing April 17-19. There will be events throughout the weekend to connect alumni with their classmates and to showcase all of the new and exciting things happening on the MCV Campus.
