National clinical trial led by Massey researcher provides mastectomy alternative for recurrent breast cancer

Mastectomy has historically been the standard treatment for breast cancer patients experiencing recurrence after an initial lumpectomy and whole-breast radiation. Now, a phase 2 clinical trial led by Douglas W. Arthur, M.D. (H.S.’94/M), Florence and Hyman Meyers Endowed Chair in Radiation Oncology, has demonstrated a breast-conserving alternative.

Massey researcher awarded $450,000 to identify effective drug combinations for triple negative breast cancer

Currently very few drugs exist to effectively inhibit the growth of triple
negative breast cancer metastases. Chuck Harrell, Ph.D., member of the Cancer Molecular Genetics research program at Massey, received a Susan G. Komen Career Catalyst Research Grant in December to identify new, more effective drug combinations.
