Welcoming the Class of 2023

They hail from 21 states and Canada, rural towns and big cities. They’ve been diving with sharks and kept bees in their backyard. They’ve set up free clinics in Nicaragua, served in the Peace Corps and taught in Detroit public schools. The varied experiences of the Class of 2023 have led them to the MCV Campus, where they participated in the White Coat Ceremony and heard from the Class of 2000’s Clifford Deal III.

The Class of 2022’s James Dittman credits his multiple scholarships for a successful showing at the 2019 Vascular Annual Meeting in June. “I’m able to focus on what I want to accomplish and do … They will have a big impact on me for years to come.”

Jordan Tozer, M’12, H’15, F’16, now a faculty member, has made his alma mater one of just a few schools offering bedside ultrasound training from M1 to M4. His innovative work earned him national accolades from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.

REACH 4 Ghana

This summer, seven medical students traveled to Ghana, including Class of 2022 scholarship recipient Nicole Karikari, whose father is from Ghana. “Since I have scholarships, I don’t take out as many loans as I would normally need to, and because of that, I can allocate some money toward the trip.”

The complex field of genome and exome sequencing often holds answers to difficult-to-diagnose diseases. Jane Juusola, Ph.D., F’12, is at the leading edge of the emerging technology. She shared her perspectives on the field with students in the genetic counseling program earlier this year.

In the tradition of Dr. Miles Hench

Larry Schlesinger, M’71, established the Miles Hench Scholarship in 2011 to honor the dean of admissions who gave him a chance. Now Schlesinger is offering to match up to $10,000 in new gifts to the scholarship, which goes to the last student admitted to each year’s incoming class.
