Featured Member Organization

The Iowa Lean Consortium is featuring member organizations and their Lean journeys in our newsletter.  This month we are featuring Story Construction. We would like to feature your ILC member organization!  Please click the button below the article to submit your organization's information.

Written by MIke Espeset, President

Story Construction is a merit-shop, full-service general contractor with 83 years in the commercial construction industry; experience in hard-bid, negotiated, design-build and construction management methods of project delivery. We work with public and private owners on a wide range of projects, including water/wastewater treatment plants, food processing plants, warehouse and distribution facilities, office buildings, senior living facilities, churches, and schools. We have earned a reputation for conducting business in an honest and fair way and providing value to our customers.

Construction Production 2.0 (CP2.0) is the lean construction method Story Construction has initiated on all projects over the past four years. CP2.0 includes elements of Lean Construction and Toyota Kata1 to focus its methodology of planning and execution at the jobsite with the trade contractors. CP2.0 is valuable on all projects because it involves discussion among the entire team at the jobsite and incorporates quality, safety, coordination, schedule adherence, and productivity into the discussion. The cadence of meetings and their corresponding planning tools harnesses the energy of the entire project team to make sure they are continually on the same page, and the right page

To those starting out on their Lean journey, realize it is a journey.  Also, it requires persistent effort and a cultural commitment to make it enduring.

We appreciate being part of the ILC because we get to connect with people who believe what we believe. We can compare notes and share learning to help us all get better. Our purpose statement is “Creating opportunities by doing the right things.”  Being around members of ILC is one of the right things.
Tell us your story!

Learn Lean in Japan

Mike Hoseus recently made us aware of a fantastic opportunity and we want to share it with you.

Honsha & Associates is a trusted network of former Toyota team members who share a deep awareness around the DNA of Toyota Culture. In addition to working globally with a variety of industries, Honsha is pleased to offer the Japan Executive Development Mission.

Your time spent in the origin of Lean thinking will broaden your perspectives and provide you with invaluable insight, both professionally and personally. On your trip you will have the opportunity to see the Toyota Production System principles applied in a number of diverse environments.

Darril Wilburn is a managing partner of Honsha, and he will be your host on the mission. I’ve had the privilege to work with Darril many times, and he is a highly respected colleague in the Lean community.

The latest edition of the trip is coming up from May 21 - 27, 2017.  It will begin in the heart of Lean, Toyota City. A sample itinerary can be seen on the
mission website:

When you register please use the code “Hoseus” to receive a signed copy of the books “Toyota Culture: The Heart and Soul of the Toyota Way” by Liker & Hoseus and “Toyota by Toyota” by Obara & Wilburn.

If you have question contact us and we will connect you with Mike.
