Happenings at the OAC...
Steel Magnolias opens March 18th and plays through April 10th. Tough as steel, delicate as magnolias, and funny, loving, and supportive… the six women in Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias come to the Art Center theater stage for a four-weekend run.

At Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in Chinquapin, Louisiana, life is anything but boring. Steel Magnolias follows six women over the course of three years as they face life’s challenges together, and find comfort in one another. Jill Dolan directs six delightful actors; LJ Noel as Truvy, Brooke Masters as M’Lynn, Laura Ring as Clairee, Sharon Reinhold as Ouiser, KiSea Katikka as Shelby, and Emily Valence as Annelle, in a funny, heart-breaking, life affirming play. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2:00. For reservations go to or call 805-640-8797.

Tom Hardcastle will exhibit “Car Culture”  March 5th through May 4th. Hardcastle celebrates over 30 years of exhibiting at the Ojai Art Center with his most recent collection of oils and pastels. His new collection, “Car Culture” explores the automobiles of yesteryear with an exciting palette of color and context, "There are so many elements beyond form and function that are engendered in the automobile: sensibility, style, attitude, and wealth to name a few. In order to capture the personality and story of each car, I approach these portraits in an organic way instead of solely mechanical,” says Hardcastle.
Ojai artist Gretchen Greenberg will be exhibiting recent paintings and sculpture. A pastel series "Night Gardens, Dusk until Dawn" will be in the Signature Gallery. Hand carved wood sculpture will be on display in the Lobby's front showcase.

Reception for both artists is Saturday, March 5th, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Art in the Park Applications are being accepted through March 20th. If you are a fine artist, sponsor or children's art instructor and would like to join us Memorial Weekend as an exhibitor, apply online or download the application

Sunday, March 13 at 2 p.m., our Literary Branch headed by Mark Lewis will feature legendary Ojai artist and writer Dennis Shives and his two, count 'em two, new books: "Great True Stories" and "Makin' Faces." The first one is all words (52 stories, mostly very short) and the second one is all images (the faces Dennis creates while on his daily walks in the wilderness, using stones, pebbles, sticks, leaves etc. that he finds in his path). He'll read a few of the stories and show slides of some of the faces, and he'll sign copies of the books (which will be available for purchase). $5 Suggested donation.
Special Events... NO HOLDS BARD
Juilliard trained veteran of the New York Shakespeare Festival, Michael Rider, will perform a one man recital of electrified readings from Shakespeare, Keats, Shelley, Yeats, Dylan Thomas and other visionary poets, in the Gallery at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12th. The show is an exultation of the power of the spoken word to transform the spirit, and the selections have been chosen for their ability to reawaken a connection to our own visionary, mythic, and transcendent selves. Quote - "I have sustained a passion for these words - their mesmerizing sounds and mysteries, their sheer incantatory power to comfort, exhort, and edify, throughout my life. When spoken well, this language is in itself a very special effect. Without question, Michael Rider has one of the finest Shakespearean voices I've ever heard in all my career. The man is fabulous." - Herb Jeffries.
Suggested donation: $10 and up.
