Scott Tuma - Eyrie C39 brand new album in stock and shipping now!
Scott Tuma is a luminary of the Chicago musical landscape from his days as guitarist in pioneering Chicago alt-country band Souled American to his work in the Boxhead EnsembleandGood Stuff House(with Matt Christensen and Mike Weis of Zelienople) and his collaborations with Jim White (Dirty Three, Xylouris White), Jim Becker (Califone), Jason Stein, Ben Boye, and Jaime Fennelly (Mind Over Mirrors). Since 2001 he has released an incredible run of albums under his own name, all performed, recorded, and mixed by Tuma from his home in Chicago. "Made By Nature" is a phrase Tuma uses to describe his way of life as he is constantly playing and recording, dependent upon the rhythms and distractions of home and capturing the environment around him. Tuma has accumulated a collection of recordings that date back to the mid-90's and he is constantly sifting through these recordings to remember things that might otherwise be forgotten.
Eyrie was recorded over the past year and features Tuma's close friend Matthew De Gennaro (Soft Abuse) on guitar for the song "F. March". Tuma and DeGennaro have played together often over the past decade, but this is the first time they appear together on record.
Eyrie will be followed by No Greener Grass, an epic double album to be released on Immune later this year.
"Tuma conjures a timeless magical mystery with his guitar. He plays the mysterious traveler, a wandering audio alchemist, turning notes and chords into gold, or rather, golden streaks of dusty memory and soft golden glimpses of some hidden and blurred otherworld. His are sounds to get lost in, to wrap around yourself like some cloak spun from gold thread, to hide under with a flashlight like a child, creating worlds of light and shadow, a sound at once mystical and enigmatic, warm and familiar, and truly truly sublime.†- Aquarius
SPIN Magazine premieres new Mind Over Mirrors video
Watch the incredible stop motion video for album track "Strange(r) Work" created by Chicago artist Timothy Breen and premiered by SPIN Magazine.
“A florid example of the slow-motion mantras he’s gotten so adept at issuingover the years.†- SPIN
The Voice Calling is the new album from Mind Over Mirrors, the Chicago based solitary reeling of Jaime Fennelly with guest vocalist Haley Fohr (of Circuit des Yeux). Using the Indian pedal harmonium, synthesizers, tape delays, and voice, Fennelly and Fohr create dynamic and strangely accessible music that feels at once devotional and measureless.
“An out-of-body experience. Haley Fohr’s voice is a bewildering force in Jaime Fennelly’s devotional and alarming synth arrangements.†– Lars Gotrich, NPR Music
Brand new album from Justin Wright of Expo 70. Hand-numbered edition of 250 copies on ultra clear vinyl. Imported from the UK.
The album was recorded using totally analogue equipment in an improvised manner that in Wright’s own words “harks back to the early days of private press releasesâ€. Those hard-to-find obscure odd-ball Electronic Records, which Wright sought out to interpret on his own and kick-off his solo presence outside of the Expo ‘70 moniker.
Long-term devotees to Wright’s recording career will no doubt dig the aspects of the recording equipment and improvised approach here may alter slightly, the trademark of cosmic drones with the other worldliness aura to his music is thankfully, very much accounted for.
Steven R. Smith/Ulaan Khol - Ending/Retruning - 2xLP
WAREHOUSE FIND OF CHAPBOOK EDITION
We recently uncovered a small stash of the long sold-out chapbook edition of the 2013 Steven R. Smith/Ulaan Khol 2xLP. The 12 page chapbook was made by Steven R. Smith to accompany the release and is a numbered edition of 200 copies.
"the double-LP Ending/Returning is split between Steven R. Smith and Ulaan Khol as he interprets the same set of songs through those respective lenses. As himself, Smith plays "Last Town on Earth" like the score to a minimalist existential western, with sparse acoustic plucks surrounded by poignant accents. As Ulaan Khol, he bombs the tune with nuclear-waste guitar, turning something desolate into something genuinely harrowing. At the close of that second version, things calm a bit, and the aftershock echoes the first version perfectly." - Pitchfork
Ending/Returning was mastered by Patrick Klem and cut to vinyl by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering. The double LP is pressed on high quality virgin vinyl and packaged in a lavish gatefold jacket. The front and back panels of the jacket are printed in silver metallic ink on a white background while the inside gatefold is a beautiful full color aerial photograph of lava fields from world-renowned German photographer Bernhard Edmaier.
