Themed “Relay For Our Oceans” to raise awareness of ocean pollution
Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, Hong Kong (OPCFHK) hosted the first-ever Charity Relay Challenge 2021 at Ocean Park Hong Kong and Water World Ocean Park on November 28, 2021. The event was the first public sports event held at the Water World since its opening. With the theme of “Relay For Our Oceans”, the event aimed to raise awareness on different environmental issues, such as climate change and plastic pollution. The event ended with great success and raised more than HK$1.2 million dollars. All proceeds from the event will go to OPCFHK to support local and Asian wildlife conservation work and other educational programmes.
Charity Relay Challenge 2021 consisted of three relay items: 350m swimming, 10km cycling and 3km trail running. The event was kick-started by a Celebrity Team and a Star Athletes Team. The Celebrity Team was led by Lau Ming Wai, Chairman of Ocean Park, with Hilary Tsui, Louisa Mak and Derek Mackesy being the team members; the Star Athletes Team was led by Guo Jing-jing, Marine Conservation Ambassador, with Yvette Kong, Arenas Chan and Hayley Chan as the team members. The two teams participated in the challenge to promote the message of environmental protection. After that, over 70 teams joined the relay, showing support to OPCFHK.
The event was fully supported by numerous enterprises and companies, including New World Development Company Limited, Clarins, OCBC Wing Hang Bank Limited, RYTHM Foundation, Sino Group, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, Kerry Logistics, Ronald Lu & Partners and Wheelock Properties. OPCFHK will continue to invest in local and Asian conservation work, at the same time strengthening the promotion of green living, for example reducing the use of single-use plastic cutlery. Together we protect our ocean and achieve a better future.
