A Note from our President & CEO
I hope that everyone is well and staying safe as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

We encourage everyone to follow the guidelines of the CDC while you are enjoying the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, our parks and open spaces. While I know that we are unable to gather in person, please know that you are in my thoughts and I am grateful for each of you. Now, more than ever, we need to stick together and as my grandfather would always say, “This too shall pass.”
We appreciate your continued support for our organization and mission!

Visit our parks and trails!
We encourage you to spend time outside, exercising and connecting with nature to support your mental, physical, and emotional health during these times. In partnership with local park districts, the Ohio & Erie Canalway Association is encouraging the following of guidelines to ensure the safety of all park and trail goers. You can see the full release here.

Join us in keeping our trails & parks clean!

In place of our annual spring Canal Cleanup, we're hosting Cleanup the Canalway week! We're encouraging nature-goers and community walkers to take part in this DIY cleanup and keep their parks clean by picking up litter while out. Post your cleanup adventures between now and Earth Day (April 22) to social media and you'll be entered to win a gift card to support a local restaurant!

Here's what to do:
  1. Head out for a walk. Keep in mind physical distancing guidelines! Consider walking around your neighborhood, or visiting a trailhead you've never been to before.
  2. Take along a plastic shopping bag or trash bag. Don't forget your gloves! Gardening or work gloves which can be washed work well.
  3. Collect your litter. Cans, paper, and plastic, oh my! Take it back to your trashcan and dispose.
  4. Document your journey and share. Post your photo to social media, along with the hashtag #canalcleanup and tag our page to be entered into the raffle! Links to our profiles can be found at the icons below. (Don't forget to give us a like or follow!)
To be eligible, you must share your post to a public social media page (so we can see the post), tag our page in the post, and have posted the image by April 22. The drawing will be held on April 23.
Support our Century Riders!
Our Century Riders need your help! The Huntington Towpath Century Ride is the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition's largest fundraiser of the year, supporting the organizations efforts to developand maintain the Towpath Trail, connector trails, and public spaces throughout the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area.

Share your words of encouragement for the community!
The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition and Akron Civic Commons are encouraging community members to submit their words of support for placement along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
The purpose of this program is to encourage healthcare workers at downtown Akron hospitals, other essential employees, and our community at large during this time. The words, submitted as text or drawing, will be printed on 18x24 inch signs and placed along the trail in downtown Akron, Ohio & Erie Canal Park (formerly Park East), and Summit Lake.
Submissions should be emailed to with the submitters name or other attribution. Submissions can either be sent as text, or as a .PNG or .PDF if it includes artwork. The first 100 submissions through April 17 will be printed, and all submitters will be entered into a drawing for a gift card to support a local restaurant of their choice.
