Votes for Women, Votes for All

This weekend a new banner goes up at church facing Robinson Street, marking the centennial for women’s right to vote upon ratification of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution on August 18.  The banner will stay up several weeks.  Thanks to Rachel Gardiner and Nicki Drumb for the design based on the concept of Joan Erwin, Ann Patton and Joy Dickinson.

Orlandoans and Unitarians were in the vanguard for the vote. In 1913, they formed an Equal Suffrage League and then the Florida Equal Suffrage Association. Both were presided over by the Rev. Mary Safford, instrumental in 1U’s founding. (She had retired to Orlando from Iowa in 1911 at the urging of her friends Mahlon and Caroline Gore, namesake of our Gore Hall.) Safford was a galvanizing force for women's suffrage in Florida.

On August 26 (the centennial of when the 19th Amendment was declared official and since celebrated as Women’s Equality Day) buildings and landmarks across the nation will be lit up in the suffragists’ colors of purple and gold.  In Orlando, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and the Lake Eola fountain will shine for the suffragists. Our banner is part of that tribute, shining a light on Votes for All. For more information contact Ann Patton,

Register for Covenant Groups (NEW Young Adult & Parents Groups Added)

Covenant groups gather once a month to engage topics themed with the services. It’s a great place to go deeper, explore new concepts and deepen relationships. New this year: Covenant Group for young adults and another for parents. These groups will decide on their meeting times.

Our general Covenant groups meet October-May on the 3rd week of the month. Group members commit to attend their group each month.  This year groups begin online.  The Wednesday night group is always online.  To sign up for a covenant group, please click the link and complete the Covenant Group Sign up form  by September 8.

To try out a covenant group, join our Drop-In Covenant Group every Wednesday from 7-8:30. See link below in the Wednesday calendar listing.

Support Share-the-Plate: LGBTQ History Museum

This month we are sharing the plate with the LGBTQ History Museum of Central Florida. Their mission is to collect, preserve and exhibit the history of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community in Central Florida. Collecting and preserving memorabilia, providing a documentary record for research, and displaying with pride that community’s social and historical contributions, they ensure the LGBTQ legacy will always be remembered. To contribute click this link and click on the “Donate” button.

We are also calling for nominations for the upcoming year 2020-2021. Have an organization you’d like to nominate? Fill out the form HERE.
