In this issue...

Welcome the March edition of the Skål UK Newsletter in which we report on the recent National Executive Council meeting and 2018 Annual General Meeting, held on the 1st February, during which Paul Hoskins completed his term as National President and Eric Etienne, formerly 1st Vice President and Past President of Skål Brighton, Sussex & the Channel Club, assumed the mantel of the Skål UK Presidential Office for the coming twelve months.

Other key topics and happenings include the forthcoming 65th Skål UK National Assembly and the work that Skål London is spearheading for Skål UK clubs in raising donations in support of the ‘Just-a-Drop’ travel industry charity that aims to raise £8,000 to fund a fresh water delivery and storage project for the children of a village school in Kenya.

We also report the death of Skål stalwart, Derek Ketteridge, who was a key member of the National Executive, 200 Club organiser and a Vice-President of Skål Brighton.

Paul Hoskins reports on the Skål UK National Executive and AGM

The National Executive Committee met on the 1st February 2018 to discuss matters following the last gathering held in September 2017 in Eastbourne and to prepare for the afternoon AGM which was attended by some 16 members with representatives from all UK clubs except Cambridge & East Anglia and Scotland who sent their apologies.

The meetings received reports from President Paul Hoskins, Secretary Lyn Snelgrove, Acting Treasurer David Goddard and former IC, now EC member, Mark Alexander. The AGM Minutes and reports will soon be available for download so here is the link to Paul Hoskins’ National President’s Report.

Vice-President Mark Langham presented an update on our Skål UK website – - which, it was agreed, required updating and this is now in process. It was also agreed to undertake a major revamp of the site in the coming months and that the management of the website should be taken back ‘in-house’ which Mark kindly volunteered to undertake.

The Ken Maiden Award (in the President’s gift) was awarded to David Goddard, Acting Treasurer – also a Past President, Treasurer and Examiner – for his sterling efforts, advice, support and having stepped into the breach to work so expeditiously on the treasury responsibilities and accounts following the passing of John Watts RIP.

Eric Etienne, our new president

Introducing Our New President

The newly-elected National President of Skål International UK, Eric Etiennne, is very much an Anglophile Frenchman.

Eric began working for P&O Normandy Ferries in France, living and working in the beautiful Côte d’Opale region that faces the English Channel and where he joined the local Skål club. It was here that Eric met his future wife, Elisabeth, a Skållegue and, at that time, a sales representative for British Rail.

Membership of Skål Cote D’Opale increased and Eric was asked to become President of this thriving club where he instigated a strong and enduring working relationship between Skål Cote D’Opale and Skål Kent. He also launched the highly popular Beaujolais Nouveau Gala Dinners and was then honoured to be asked to join the Skål France National Council.

After a while, Eric moved to Paris to work for Sealink. When Sealink closed its Paris Office, Eric returned to Cote D’Opale and he launched his own tour operating company, mostly selling tours from France to London and specialising in the ‘seniors’ market.

But Skål France was, at that time, in decline. The Skål Lille and Skål Picardie clubs had closed and Cote d’Opale then became only Skål club in Northern France. But, the links with Skål Clubs Kent, Brighton and Canterbury remained strong, and, before long, it was decided that they should merge into one unique club: Skål International, Brighton, Sussex and the Channel.

This did not impress the President of Skål France very much, but the club thrived and went on to become a unique and inspiring manifestation of Skål’s maxim of ‘Doing Business Amongst Friends’. When Eric was elected President of this new two-nation club. He was a little daunted as it was the first club of its kind, but it thrived and, before long, Eric was asked to join the Skål UK National Council

SKÅL is a huge part of Eric’s life. He was introduced to his wife, Elizabeth, through his friendship with her father, Jean, who was a founder member of a Skål club and their daughter, Alice, is a young Skål member which has provided her with many jobs opportunities and travel experiences in many parts of the world, and where the Presidents of local Skål clubs have made her feel welcome and part of the global community that is Skål!

Eric says; “It is a great honour to have been appointed as the UK Skål UK National President. I have many objectives in mind, including the ongoing  revival of Skål Scotland and the revitalisation of Skål UK. I know that I am not alone and that my fellow council members share these ambitions.

"During the next 65th Skål National Assembly, which takes place in Eastbourne in April, I will present a detailed work programme for the year ahead. But the revitalisation of Skål UK cannot be achieved by a few people – so I ask for your help in this important project.”

Derek Ketteridge

Derek W. Ketteridge RIP:
22 August 1940 – 26 January 2018

As reported elsewhere, we were saddened to learn that long-time Skålleague, Derek Ketteridge, had died suddenly while preparing to attend an event in Eastbourne. At the time of his passing Derek was a stalwart member of the National Executive with special responsibility for the 200 Club which brought him into contact with every member of Skål UK.

As a member for many years of his home Club, Skål Brighton, Sussex and the Channel, Derek was Vice-President and his presence will be greatly missed by all his many Skålleagues, friends and business associates.

A service of celebration and joy for the life of Derek was held in Brighton at the Downs Crematorium on the 20th. February, attended by his Family and some hundred mourners, including 12 representatives from Skål UK led by National President Eric Etienne and Skål Brighton President Christine Ayers.

Download the eulogy to Derek Ketteridge, prepared and written by Kerry Stephens who worked with Derek for over 28 years.

A new app for recording notes taken in the shower

Only in America!

A recently opened Marriott hotel in Irvine, California, is offering guests a digital notepad with a difference!

Working on the principle that lots of people have their best ideas whilst in the bath or the shower, Marriott is currently testing a device that will allow guests to scribe or sketch their thoughts, ideas and finger-pictures onto a steamy shower door before sending an image of the door, complete with message, to their email address!

Watch this video to see how the shower door becomes a digital notepad.
Just a Drop water charity project in Kenya

Skål London & UK Supports Just-a-Drop Water Charity in Kenya

Skål International is a supporter of the Just-a-Drop charity, founded and led by Fiona Jeffery OBE, former Chairman of WTM’s Reed Travel Exhibitions and which is working to provide communities around the world with access to sustainable clean water, sanitation facilities and safe hygiene practices.

Just-a-Drop has been working hard to save and improve lives for nearly 20 years and Skål London President, Brian Donnelly and Past President, Paul Hoskins are looking to provide this charity with more support
and help create bigger opportunities to make a difference, as follows.

The Tutini Secondary School, Kenya

Just-a-Drop aims to provide clean and safe water, as well as hygiene education, to the 385 students attending this mixed day and boarding school located in Makueni County, an arid region of Kenya.

Currently, the students obtain water through 5 large plastic tanks, but in order to fill the tanks, water has to be bought and this is costing the school a great deal of money, hampering the school’s development.

Just-a-Drop will provide a water tank for the school for year round, safe, clean water, using a tank which harvests water from the school roof during the two Kenyan rainy seasons and the cost of the project and the fundraising target is just under £9,000.
We will therefore work with Just-a-Drop to develop a calendar of fund-raising events and encourage Skål members to provide a fundraising and engagement support for this important project, so any support from any Skålleagues, from far and wide, would be most welcome.

Almost anything can become a fundraising event– from sponsored 10k runs, cycling events, international treks or muddy challenges, or on site fundraising such as cake sales, auction dinners, raffles and a host of other ideas.

Perhaps a friendly rivalry between Skål clubs could develop, with the club which raises the most money making a visit to see first-hand the huge impact Skål will be making to this school and the lives of its students and staff.
