Together We're Changing Lives

As we approach the end of this challenging year, I've been thinking a lot about how much our little grassroots nonprofit has accomplished since it began with 5 people sitting around a kitchen table in 2011. Major accomplishments include:

Researchers: Mark Your Calendars
California Research Summit Jan. 22-23 2021
Start School Later (SSL) is proud to join Harvard Medical School, the World Sleep Society, the Sleep Research Society and other health organizations in endorsing this upcoming online summit hosted by Stanford University School of Medicine with funding from the National Sleep Foundation and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Deep interest in sleep and school start times by academics from many disciplines--including sleep and circadian biology, neuroscience, education, medicine, mental health, safety, public policy, economics, implementation science, and diversity science--inspired this summit following California's passage of landmark "start school later" law in 2019. Co-sponsored by SSL and the California PTA, this legislation (SB328) prevents most CA public middle and high schools in the state from requiring middle school attendance before 8 a.m. and high school attendance before 8:30 a.m.by the 2022 school year.

Student Hall of Fame
Anthony Maio, a student at Central Bucks High School East, who wrote an article for the Courier Times arguing for the particular importance of sleep during the pandemic and the immediate need to start school later, as well as debunking common excuses for unsafe, unhealthy start times.

Later Start Time is Associated with Fewer Migraines
This new study found that adolescents with migraine who attend high schools that follow American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations for start times report less headache frequency than those whose schools start before 8:30 a.m.

Now you can access Sleep 101, our award-winning interactive, online educational program for 7th to 12th graders.
Using games, interactive scenarios, and videos, this free program takes students through a 25-minute curated experience imparting actionable information on how sleep affects academic and athletic performance, physical and mental health, and safety, including practical tips on caffeine consumption and sleep hygiene.

Thousands of students have taken Sleep 101, and it has been successfully incorporated into health, biology, and advisory classes.
