Sleep, Safety, and School Start Times

Dear Friends of Start School Later,

As we enter the 11th month of this long and challenging year, it helps to feel we still have the power to make change. This first week is the National Sleep Foundation's Drowsy Driver Prevention Week, something we at SSL happily support. Safe driving goes hand in hand with later school start times.

As always, too, we're delighted to share info to help your efforts to ensure safe, healthy, equitable school hours--including new and exciting resources from our growing Let's Sleep! initiative. Scroll down for details.

Drowsy Driving Prevention Week is Nov. 1-8, 2020

FACT: Communities with later morning high school start times have lower rates of teen car crashes.

Researchers: Mark Your Calendars
California Research Summit Jan. 22-23 2021
Start School Later (SSL) is proud to join Harvard Medical School, the World Sleep Society, the Sleep Research Society and other health organizations in endorsing this upcoming online summit hosted by Stanford University School of Medicine with funding from the National Sleep Foundation and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Deep interest in sleep and school start times by academics from many disciplines--including sleep and circadian biology, neuroscience, education, medicine, mental health, safety, public policy, economics, implementation science, and diversity science--inspired this summit following California's passage of landmark "start school later" law in 2019. Co-sponsored by SSL and the California PTA, this legislation (SB328) prevents most CA public middle and high schools in the state from requiring middle school attendance before 8 a.m. and high school attendance before 8:30 a.m.by the 2022 school year.

Student Hall of Fame
Congrats to Sammy Ryan, an AP English student at Marshfield High School in MA, just named to the Start School Later Student Hall of Fame. Ryan wrote a compelling, well-researched, and thoughtful editorial for The Patriot Ledger arguing that starting high school later would improve teens' health.
