Message From Your President

Maggie Callicrate

Greetings, Fellows!

You have likely heard the saying that those who know what they want, get what they want; and those who don’t, get what they get. It’s the start of a new year, winter here in the northern hemisphere, and a good time for dreaming, imagining, making a vision for what we want, both personally and professionally. I recently created a personal vision for 2016, picturing what I want for myself at year-end, and considering the seeds I want to sew, sustain and harvest come November and December. How would doing this same exercise, I wonder, impact our College of Law Practice Management?
In my view, we are at our best as a College when we are together. We love learning together. We care deeply about our work, the future of the legal industry, our clients, our firms, access to justice, and nurturing others. With these thoughts in mind, here’s what I want for the College in 2016:

  • More time together. Gather in Kansas City this September 15-16, for sure, and over lunch or a drink with Fellow(s) near you. Based on direct comments and feedback from the 2015 attendee surveys, we are working to give 2016 attendees what they want so we can make this year's Futures Conference the best ever.
  • Make greater use of our network. Call a Fellow you haven’t spoken with for some time, or ever, and ask to kick around an idea, for guidance or support.
  • Build our community. Nominate others whom you believe should be among us—nominations for the Class of 2016 are due by February 12.
  • Outstanding innovation. A bevy of brilliant InnovAction Award Applications from which selecting winner(s) will be difficult.
  • Strengthen our connectedness. With help from our new Social Media Committee, share your posts, publications, news, social media, etc.
  • Share more. Frequently exchange our learnings, our writings, innovative ideas for development of law practice management, for the College itself.
  • Give back. Many are less fortunate, and we have any number of opportunities to give back. Choose a site visit via our partnership with the Legal Services Corporation, and I know that you will be fulfilled.
  • What's your vision for the College? Think about your role as a Fellow in this awesome collective, and let any member of the Board of Trustees know what you want from the College. We would love to hear from you.

The start of a new year is also a time to be mindful of what we are grateful for. Personally, I am grateful for all of you, for the friendship we share, the learning we do together and the inspiration we give to one another. I’m grateful for the many Fellows who have worked, over the past twenty years, to make the College a truly meaningful collective and avenue for innovating and serving within the legal profession. And, I'm very grateful for our College Administrator, Debbie Curtis-O'Connell.
All the very best for a fulfilling and rewarding 2016!

What's Happening?

2016 Futures Conference: Dan Pinnington and his Co-Chair Patricia Lane have been planning for the 2016 Futures Conference. Mark your calendar now to join your Fellows in Kansas City on September 15 and 16 for another outstanding educational experience.

Building the College: New Fellows

When you look at the roster of College Fellows, who's missing? Who should be nominated due to outstanding contributions to the field of law practice management? Nominate those exceptional individuals—your peers, mentors or advisors—for COLPM's Class of 2016!

Visit the Nominations section of our website for the 2016 Nominations Form and additional information. Please complete the form and submit it by February 12 to the College Administrator.

Lunch, Anyone?

As proved out during the "speed dating" session at last year's Future Conference, we love talking with one another. Wouldn't it be nice to get together and exchange ideas, best practices and gain advice from one another throughout the year? This is also a great way to welcome our newest Fellows. Perhaps you have a conference room large enough to host local Fellows for a brown bag lunch at your place. Or, maybe it's easier to meet for breakfast or cocktails at a place convenient to those who want to join in. You can use the Fellows Directory for a quick search for Fellows by state/province. We hope that you will get together with other Fellows in and around your city, and we especially hope that you'll welcome our newest Fellows in this way.

2016 Futures Conference—
What Will Law Look Like in 2026?

There is no question, huge changes are afoot in just about every aspect of the law and legal services. This is true in the world of big law, for sole practitioners, and everyone in between. Clients of all types are asking for and driving these changes. But while currently hot and emerging topics give some insights on what lies ahead, we want to give you a glimpse of what the world of legal services will look like in 10 years, out in 2026. With the participation of some of the best minds in management, marketing, finance, technology and education, the COLPM 2016 Futures Conference is uniquely positioned to give you a clearer view of the future of law. Panels of leading experts from all these disciplines—and some clients too—will share their insights on the changes we will see. And how’s your crystal ball? Be prepared to share your best ideas and predictions on our futures whiteboard. Attendees will take home a much better idea of what the law will look like in 2026. You will also have the opportunity to meet your fellow leaders in law practice management. Look for more “speed networking” and our other usual social activities.

The host hotel for our Futures Conference is the Intercontinental Kansas City at the Plaza. To secure our special conference rate, enter your arrival and departure dates and click “check availability.” Then, on the left hand side, scroll down, click on group code. Enter CLP and then click “apply.” Book early to make sure you're together with all your College friends!

Calling All Fellows:
We Need Your Help!

Fellows Steve Nelson and Sharon Nelson (no, they're not related!) are working together to attract sponsors for the Futures Conference and related College initiatives.

Our sponsors appreciate engaging with so many thought leaders in the field of law practice management and find that sponsorship is a great investment. There are plenty of other potential sponsors out there—but they have to know about us first! It's our mission to make sure that they do.

How can you help? Please think of organizations you know that may be a good fit for sponsoring the College, and give Steve and Sharon their names and the contact information of someone you know in those organizations. If you don’t have a contact but still believe you know of a good target organization, pass that along and they will take it from there.

Review our flyer for details about the sponsorship packages and benefits. If everyone gives us a couple of ideas, we'll be off and running. Please email Sharon Nelson and Steve Nelson with your suggestions.

Because our timing is important, please get back to Steve and Sharon by February 19. Thank you in advance for your support. Let's make 2016 a terrific year for the College!

Increase Your Visibility

The College has an arrangement with Mondaq through which we are able to distribute Fellows' articles on law firm management in the same way that attorneys use the platform to distribute their articles on law-related topics. The subject “Law Practice” is available under “More” on the ribbon near the top of the Mondaq page where you see “Employment, Health Care, Commercial, etc.” In addition to increased visibility via the Mondaq site, your articles will also benefit from greater search engine results through this arrangement.
To participate, send the College Administrator links to the articles you would like to have included on Mondaq.
