Making some noise about Gong | Issue 6 | September 2014
It always feels as though there is an unfeasibly large amount to do in too short a time right about now. It’s easy to feel too busy to stand back, take stock and keep in touch. The discipline of a newsletter is a great reminder of the power of the network and how it deserves to be nurtured. So in the spirit of staying connected, here is our news. And we’d love to hear yours.

Resistance isn’t futile!

Welcome to Sam Vogts, who joins Gong to lead the Olam team at a milestone moment. Olam is 25 this year and there are some exciting celebration projects that we have been entrusted with. On a personal note, Sam made the mistake of admitting to being quite sporty, so we volunteered her to test ride the world’s first purpose built high intensity training bike from our new client, High Octane Ride. Here she is about to feel the effects of a 45 minute jog after just 20 seconds of scientifically engineered resistance. There’s a metaphor for life at Gong in there somewhere just bursting to get out!

Also joining this month as an Associate is Nancy Prendergast, a senior PR with extensive international experience. Nancy (originally from the US) is a tech maven, who has lived and worked in London for 20 years — for Ogilvy, the FT, World Economic Forum, BBC and supported the founders of literally dozens of digital start-ups. We’ve known Nancy for over a decade: she was previously MD of Gong’s precursor Gnash before founding her own boutique agency. Nancy splits her time between Europe and the US.

Ashburton selects Gong

Gong has been appointed by Ashburton Investments, the new generation asset manager, following a competitive pitch. As part of the First Rand Group, Ashburton manages US$13.25 billion of assets and has a 30 year track record of investing across a range of asset classes in developed and emerging markets. We are working alongside our colleague Grant Henry in South Africa to leverage his work for Ashburton there, developing a seamless international campaign.

Sitting pretty

We were thrilled to get a call from Swoon Editions to work on their funding announcement for a classic Gong territory engagement: an entrepreneurial challenger brand, moving at speed but building an enduring quality product. With investment from A-listers Index Ventures and Octopus Investments, these guys are ones to watch. Congratulations again to Brian and Debbie on closing their funding round in such high style.



Dates for your diary

Post the summer lull, the conference season is getting back up to speed. We will be supporting the Economist Events' European Retail Banking event in London in October, the first World Water Summit in November, the Urban Infrastructure event in November, and CFO in February 2015.

From boarding schools to billboards

Taking time out from puzzling over the installation of 10x8m Garden City billboards in Nairobi, the Gong Creative team has been working closer to home on a set of marketing materials for Somerset boarding school, Sexey's, as well as a raft of ongoing work for PPS in Ghana (with their brand new brand) and new client, pioneering Nigerian private equity firm, African Capital Alliance.

Congratulations to Board Intelligence whose think tank, 'The Board is Dead, Long Live the Board' staged an end of season grand finale, played out against the backdrop of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The format was an inspiring medley of mixed-media performance art and an exhibition of the best Visual Minutes from more than 50 think tank sessions. The guest list read like a who's who of FTSE Boards and their advisors.
