Child Development Center receives $1.26 million DOE grant


The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the VCU Child Development Center a four-year, $1.26 million grant to provide child care services for the children of low-income undergraduate students.

SOE center receives school’s largest contract award

The U.S. Social Security Administration has awarded a new five-year $27.7 million contract to the National Training and Data Center in the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center, a partnership of SOE and the School of Medicine’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The contract — the largest in SOE’s history — will fund support services for Social Security disability beneficiaries.

Three faculty members receive $1.6 million CDC grant

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has awarded Charol Shakeshaft, Ph.D.; Kellie Carlyle, Ph.D. (Cert.’14/E); and Abigail Conley, Ph.D., a $1.6 million grant to launch a study to evaluate a program focused on preventing sexual abuse, misconduct and exploitation of students by school employees.

Christine Powell: ‘Find your passion, and pursue your dream’

Christine Powell (B.S.’10/H&S; M.S.’12/HP; Cert.’13/GPA; M.Ed.’16/E) is a second-year student in the Ph.D. in Education program, with a concentration in special education and disability leadership, (which transitioned to Ph.D. in Special Education in fall 2020) with an estimated May 2022 graduation. She works as a program assistant in the SOE-affiliated Minority Educator Center and was recently accepted into the VCU Holmes Scholars Program.

Katie Brendli: Supporting better transitions for people with disabilities

Katie Brendli, Ph.D. (Ph.D.’20/E), is a data associate for the Yang-Tan Institute on Employment and Disability in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. Brendli received her Ph.D. in Education, with a concentration in special education and disability leadership, from VCU in September 2020.
