Dietra Trent, Ph.D. (M.P.A.’95/GPA; Ph.D.’07/GPA) didn’t plan on a life in politics. But her career path formed soon after she landed a spot on Virginia Rep. Bobby Scott’s first congressional campaign and returned to school to earn her master’s and doctorate in public policy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Today, as Virginia’s secretary of education, Trent is working with key communities around the commonwealth to bolster student success.

Dec. 10, 2016, was a “make it real” moment for more than 2,200 students who attended VCU’s main commencement ceremony at the E.J. Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center and individual academic unit ceremonies on and near campus. Commencement speaker Todd P. Haymore (M.B.A.’04/B), Virginia secretary of commerce and trade, encouraged graduates to strive for excellence, accept and learn from failures, continue to seek education, practice integrity and, most importantly, work hard.
