Education: S. Dallas Dance is 2013 Alumni Star
When Baltimore County Public Schools hired S. Dallas Dance (M.Ed.’02/E; Ph.D.’07/E) as superintendent, the district hadn’t tapped a person his age for the position in half a century. At 30, Dance was only five years removed from earning his doctorate focused on educational leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University, which led some to question whether he had the experience to lead the 26th-largest school district in the country. Education: Alumnus named Virginia secretary of education
Governor Bob McDonnell announced that alumnus Javaid Siddiqi (B.S.’00/H&S; Ph.D.’12/E) will become Virginia’s next secretary of education following the departure of Secretary Laura Fornash, effective Nov. 18. Siddiqi was appointed in October 2011 to serve as deputy secretary of education, focusing his efforts on improving teacher quality and improving educational outcomes for all students. Read more.
Education: Alumnus headed to Ironman championships
About four years ago, Joel Hughes (B.S.’97/E) finished a lecture on the importance of setting fitness goals when he was challenged by a student. Hughes, a physical education teacher at the Juvenile Detention Home in Chesterfield County, Va., had just told students they could accomplish anything as long as they set goals. Read more.
VCU Libraries: New building on fast track
Recently, the VCU Libraries community tangibly heard and felt our near future: The rat-a-tat-tat of jackhammers at dawn. A crew was exploring how the concrete aggregate panels are attached to Cabell Library in order to finalize construction specs for the new library on the Monroe Park Campus. Read more.
