8th Grade High School Choice

Last week we reached out to our 8th grade families on setting up ParentVue accounts. Some 8th grade families were able to log into their account without our support, while others needed their activation codes sent by us via email. If you have yet to log into your ParentVue account or have not received any communication from me directly, please let me know and I will assist you as soon as possible.

I also think it's important to note that no high school recruitment events will happen prior to the High School Choice Annual update meeting our administrative staff are scheduled to attend in the first week of October. This means that the dates for Shadow Days and other popular recruiting events have not been solidified and shared with any schools yet within LBUSD. As soon as we receive this information, we will notify our 8th grade families. I look forward to sharing more about the High School Choice process at Back To School Night. See you then!
From the Office
Clubs & After School Academy
October is club and After School Academy month! Students will find out more about clubs at this Friday's Virtue Ceremony.

Parents - do you have a skill you would like to teach students? We are looking for volunteers to teach our After School Academy! In the past we have had ceramics, music, create your own website, handyman skills, creative writing and much more! Contact Danielle with your ideas and questions.
From Our Principal
Points of Access for Families - Creating Culture Together

The language of the virtues allows learners to see themselves as nuanced and complex thinkers rather than just "smart" or "not-smart." Re-defining how we see ourselves is a process that includes great tension - for IVA students it means learning to take risks, learning to ask questions, learning to listen to each other's contributions, and to add to their own.

The best support we have to give our students is supportive relationships with our teachers - who themselves want to grow in their intellectual character, who are passionate about their subjects, and invite their students to build into their own learning.

Our teachers have their work cut out for them! To develop the virtues of students, students need an opportunity to practice the virtues through their conversations, experiences, and writing assignments. It would be much easier for a teacher to set up engaging ways for kids to consume content, instead IVA teachers present opportunities to reflect what they have learned, and to be curious.

Our students jump into this new culture like it is a new lease on the love of learning. As one parent described it, it's "like a light turning back on."

Points of access for parents to be involved in their students' learning and character formation at IVA:
  • Back to School Night - Experience learning at IVA! How do you evaluate a school program for effectiveness?
  • Parent Academy - Be a part of the discussion! How do we use an intellectual virtues approach at home?
  • Parent Conferences - Apply the virtues to learning! What is my child's relationship with learning and how does that play out in the classroom?
  • School Advisory Council - Think creatively! How can we problem-solve together?
  • Illuminate and Google Classroom - Connect online. How can I sit alongside my child to help them understand assignments and how to connect with their teachers?
You are invited Next Week!

School Advisory Council - Dressing out for PE at IVA
When? Tuesday, October 4 from 3:30 - 4:30pm
Where? Room 113
Who? All parents, students, and staff are invited if you are interested in finding solutions to our conundrum
  • Our boys are rough on the restrooms
  • We have a full-sized privacy accordion divider for them to change in the Rec Center to avoid the restrooms
  • We do not have supervision for this option - yet - small staff & cannot afford to hire more supervision.
  • Students have already contributed great ideas and we want to explore all options.
We hope you are willing to come share your ideas!
I will also propose ideas for the next School Advisory Council -

The SAC advises Intellectual Virtues Academy of parents', students', and facultys' perspectives and provides recommendations about school issues. IVA will create the SAC as a formal way to include parent perspectives in the school’s decision-making process. SAC members actively reach out to engage families in school policy discussions.

We are always looking for ways to get our parents connected and we love to get your feedback. Please call the office if you feel disconnected and we will work to connect you with our resources and events.

To learn and live well,
Jacquie Bryant

PTSA News
PTSA will be at Back to School night on Sept. 28th and will be accepting cash, check or credit cards. This will be the last opportunity to pay for your student(s) ASB fee in person before the cutoff date of Oct 14th.
