Over 450 Certified Iceland Specialists

In 2016, Promote Iceland launched an online training program designed to help travel professionals market Iceland as a tourist destination by becoming certified Iceland Specialist. At the end of year 2016 more than 450 travel agents and tour operators, from all around the world, had graduated. They are now permitted to use the Inspired by Iceland Specialist badge and have been listed on the website Visit Iceland as ‘specialists’ on Iceland.

The program gives an advantage in selling Iceland as a tourist destination, providing better service. The online course is also a guideline through Iceland's breathtaking landscapes, colorful history and vibrant culture.

New Catalogue of Icelandic Volcanoes

Collaboration of The Icelandic Meteorological Office (the State Volcano Observatory), the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland and the Civil Protection Department of the National Commissioner of the Iceland Police, have created The Catalogue of Icelandic Volcanoes. The Catalogue is an online publication, intended to serve as an up-to-date source of information on active volcanoes in Iceland. View page

Record Breaking Year

According to the Icelandic Tourist Board the number of foreign visitors travelling to Iceland was approximately 1.77m in 2016 or 40% more than in 2015. There have never been as many visitors over the course of a single year. Although there were significant increases in all months, proportionately the greatest increase was in the latter part of the year. Further information 

Best places to Visit in Year 2017

CNN Travel has voted West Iceland as one of 17 best places to visit in 2017. According to CNN, West Iceland is particularly appealing, while being a short driving distance from Reykjavik and really worth a visit.

North Iceland makes the Forbes list as one of the 10 coolest places to visit in 2017. Pointing out the magnificent location where visitors can come in close proximity to whale watching, waterfalls, moonscapes and geothermal pools.

The Independent maintains that one of the hottest hotels will be opening in North Iceland in year 2017, The Deplar Farm.

According to Lonely Planet, the grand opening in South Iceland will be the “state-of-the-art” Lava Center in Hvolsvöllur.

Iceland Academy Campaign a Success 

In February, last year, Inspired by Iceland launched the campaign Iceland Academy, an online tool designed to inform and inspire tourists to travel responsibly when in Iceland. Since the campaign started, over 19.000 participants have completed all the classes. One of those people is Antonella Vallone from Toronto in Canada who was awarded with a surprise tour to Iceland. Responsible Tourism in Iceland

On January 10, over 250 companies endorsed a declaration on responsible tourism in the presence of the President of Iceland, who is also the patron of the project. Responsible tourism is an incentive project where companies connected with tourism, agree on a limited number of clear and simple measures of responsible tourism. The purpose of the project is to maintain Iceland‘s status as an optimal future destination for tourists by supporting sustainability for future generations of the nation. About responsible tourism
